Lang shakes his head, his expression filled with concern.“We have to have a good argument.”

“Someone is making a lot of money off of her story,” I groan, my voice filled with indignation and a touch of righteous anger.

“We discovered that all the proceeds are going to four separate non-profits.No one is making money off of it.”He stares at me, his words hanging in the air as if hoping I’ll put two and two together.

“Which means that if I try to stop it, I’ll come out as the asshole,” I conclude, my voice heavy with resignation.

“Most likely,” Lang confirms, his tone empathetic.“Are there people trying to figure out who this is about?Yep.But ...we’re working with the PR to ensure that we keep everyone away from Grey and you.”

Conflicting emotions swirl within me.Should we continue reading, or should we put an end to it and forget completely about our past? That’s impossible. We can’t move forward until we can learn from it.

Just then, Mane walks over to me, wrapping me in a hug.“We’re at the farm.Come over for dinner, okay?I understand this is something you two should be dealing with, but we’re here for you.”

“All of us,” Beacon confirms.“You’re always pitching in and making sure everyone is doing well. It’s our turn to take care of you.”

Normally, I would brush off their concern and insist that I’m fine. But this time, I take a deep breath and respond, “Thank you,” knowing this will get worse and doubting it’ll ever get better.

Ever.

Love my family. But I’m not thrilled that they continue treating me as the shattered guy who could barely lift his head after they rescued me from the bowels of hell.Memories from that period are only fragments tucked away in the depths of my mind—I was all kinds of fucked-up.

As I step back into the quaint cottage, the air heavy with emotions, Sanford’s gaze locks onto me.“What was that?”

My eyes fleetingly dart toward the cobblestone pad his friends are using to walk away.

“You tell me.Those areyourfriends,” I reply with a hint of frustration. There are too many people involved.

And I shouldn’t be bitching about their presence.Technically, they’ve been part of my family for as long as I can remember.Beacon is married to my cousin Grace, and the others are like cousins twice removed.I just don’t appreciate them barging in while we’re in the middle of ...whatever the fuck we’re trying to do here.

“They’re more like brothers to me,” Sanford corrects me.“They came to check on you too, though. But I was asking about Zeke. Are you okay?”

“Tucker sent him to make sure I’m fine.I’m ready for whatever comes next.”

I pick up the book, and a few pages are folded at the corners.“What the fuck?”

He grins, attempting to downplay the situation.“It’s just a piece of paper.”

I shoot him a stern look.My parents taught me early on to treat books delicately and with care.“You and your friends are obviously savages and no matter what you say, we’ll never agree.Who did it and why?”

“Lang. He already read it.According to him, some chapters about Enya’s college life are irrelevant.”He shrugs as if saying, you read the shit from the last chapter, it was boring.

I nod, but a playful grin tugs at my lips.“How aboutour girl’scollege life? Are we getting to the good part?”

San reaches for his phone, his fingers gliding across the screen. After a brief moment, he shakes his head.“No.There’s nothing about that.”

I let out a sigh, tinged with a hint of longing.“That’s one of my favorite parts about us.”

“Which part exactly? The one when we went to New York to find her an apartment or when we practically started living together?”

A smirk graces my face, as the memories of that time flood back.“You can’t have one without the other.”
