It’s been an exceptionally long day at work. As I pull up the long driveway, the sight of Ava chasing bubbles in the yard with Skylar makes all the stress float away.

Getting out of the car, Ava runs over to me and I squat down. “Hi, daddy!” She squeals excitedly. Catching her mid-jump, I spin us in a circle and kiss the top of her head. She wiggles to get down, running off to chase another bubble. Standing up, I watch her run around.

“Hey honey,” Skylar steps in front of me and I stand. I take a moment to adore her beautiful face, scanning her from head to toe.

“Hello, gorgeous.” I pull her to me and press a kiss to her lips. My hand reaches around to grip her ass, giving it a nice squeeze. “How was your day?” I ask, leaning back to look in her eyes. I scan the yard, watching Ava run around with the puppy while popping all the bubbles her little hands can reach.

As she tells me about the errands they ran today, how she and Ava had a good day with no issues. I watch as Ava starts chasing the dog instead of the floating soap suds. Something catches my eye, and I glance over at Skylar before squatting back down, holding my hands out.

“Ava, come here,” I call for her, and Skylar stops talking. She simply smiles when I look up at her. I raise my brow, while Ava turns toward us.

She bounces over to me with a big smile on her face. I reach to straighten her shirt out to get a better look and immediately stand back to my full height.

Turning to face my amazing wife, she has a huge smile on her face. “Really?” I ask, a mix of disbelief and happiness swirls through me. Her eyes are glossy with unshed tears, nodding her head aggressively.

“Really!" she squeals excitedly. Wrapping my arms around her waist, I lift her feet off the ground, legs wrapping around me. She places her hands on my cheeks as she leans down to kiss me. Her lips on mine feel like fireworks all over again, the constant reminder that this is the love of my life. My hands on her butt squeeze gently, causing a slight giggle to erupt from her. We both pull back, looking lovingly into each other’s eyes.

Giving her one last peck, I set her back on the ground. I turn to look at Ava’s shirt one more time. The words ‘Big Sister’ are elegantly stitched across the front, the pink wording standing out along the white shirt.

We had been trying for another since Ava turned one. After a few months of stressing over ovulation tests and more negative pregnancy tests, we decided to just focus on Ava. The constant heartache and pain from trying to plan sex around cycles just made our libido drop. Aggressive tracking and planned sex really sucks. We just gave up and decided to go natural, that if it happened, it happened. That was over a year ago.

“You have no idea how much I needed this today.” I wrap Skylar up in my arms again, placing kisses across her face. “Let’s go celebrate.”

After wrangling our rambunctious over-sized toddler into her car seat, I make the drive to Skylar’s favorite steak house. The smile on my face remains throughout the duration of the dinner as we make plans to turn the third bedroom into the nursery. We talked about color schemes, animal themes, and potential names that once were archived in our minds. To say we were ecstatic was an understatement.

When we arrive back at the house, I get Ava ready for bed while Skylar takes a shower. Once she’s had her cup of milk, two stories, and lots of kisses, she finally gives in and falls asleep.

Sneaking out of her room, I walk down the hall to the master bedroom. Skylar is just climbing into bed when I go to the closet to change into sweatpants. Getting in the bed beside her, I pull the covers over both of us and pull her close to me, her back going to my front.

“Good night, Sky,” I whisper into her ear and kiss her cheek.

“Good night, I love you,” she murmurs sleepily. Snuggling in together, I feel her heart beating against my hand on her chest.

The next thing I know, the sound of a blaring alarm fills the bedroom. Jumping up, I rush over to my phone sitting on the desk.

“What the hell is going on?” Skylar groans, pulling my pillow over her face to mute the sound.

“I’m sorry, babe.” Looking at the notification on my phone, I rub my eyes to make sure I’m reading it correctly, taking a few moments before slipping it into the pocket of my pants. Declan is going to kill me for waking him up at six in the morning, but he will get over it.

Going over to Skylar’s side of the bed, I kiss her cheek. “I’ll be back shortly, I love you,” I promise, before darting out of the room.

Chapter twelve

Declan

Loudbangingatmydoor causes me to bolt upright in my bed.

“Declan, open up.” Finn’s voice comes from the other side, echoing through the room. Rubbing my eyes roughly, I look over at my clock, the time reads six-fifteen in the morning. Whatever is going on must be important.

Grabbing my sweats from the floor, I slide them on and go to the door. When I open it, I have to stifle a laugh. Finn is still in his pajamas, his blonde hair is a tousled mess. Clearing my throat, I lean in the doorway with my arms crossed.

“What’s going on?” I ask, running my fingers through my hair then over my face trying to wipe the sleep away.

“She’s here.” Those two words snap me out of my post sleep haze, and I immediately step out of the room pushing past him.

“Where?” I bark, walking down the stairs and to the foyer.

“She’s at the safe house.” He steps in front of me, and I glare at him. “You need to calm down. If you storm in there and go all caveman, then she is definitely not going to come back. She’s already scared, the last thing you want is to push her away even more. Think about it, Declan.”
