“Sit back down. Dinner will be ready soon,” he warned.

“Fuck you,” I replied curtly, turning on my heel. With renewed vigor, I took off through the woods, thankful for the knee-high fur boots protecting me from the cold of the snow. I only got a few steps into the trees before his big strong hand reached out and caught my upper arm in its grasp.

It stopped me in my tracks. I pulled hard, trying to get away, but I didn’t move an inch. With a snarl, I whirled back, swinging my arm with the full intent of slapping him again. He caught my wrist.

His entire face darkened with a certain wild ferocity, and I sucked in a breath.

“There are dangers in these woods that a human like you is not prepared to deal with.”

“Let me go,” I demanded, keeping my voice low.

“I was simply going to drag you back to the fire and bind you if I needed to, human, but that was before you tried to slap me again.”

My stomach dropped. My pussy clenched, and my core throbbed to life. My edginess grew in spades, and I could do nothing but stand there mutely at the full weight of his meaning. He said nothing, but he didn’t need to. Without meaning to, I dropped my gaze to the thick leather belt around his waist.

“Something else needs to happen now, doesn’t it?”

His voice had lowered to a deep rumble, causing every hair on my flesh to rise up with heat. Even though the temperature was cold all around me, the warmth in my body drew up in spades, so much so that I even felt a tiny bead of sweat roll down the length of my spine.

“Let me go!” I shrieked. This time my voice was loud enough to carry, bouncing off the trees and echoing all around us with a finality that made me raise my chin in open defiance.

His eyes narrowed and his upper lip rolled in a bit of a growl, but something else gave us both pause.

A shrill scream broke the tense silence between us. It was a scream that instantly evoked thoughts of pain and agony. It was the kind of scream a woman might make in the throes of death.

Instantly, Nykor’s face fell, and he stiffened with alarm.

“Fuck,” he swore.

“What is it?” I asked fearfully.

“Ice wraiths,” he said quickly, the seriousness of his tone making my fear that much worse.

The temperature dropped all around us precipitously. One second I was warm, and the next I could see my breath all around me. Immediately, my body started to shiver. I grabbed the edges of my fur mantle and tried to pull it closed, but then a hand wrapped around my hair and jerked me backwards so hard that I slammed on the ground onto my back.

I shrieked in terror, reaching back and trying to rip away from whatever was holding me captive, but there wasn’t anything there. I tried to wrench my head back so I could see whatever was attacking me, but there was nothing behind me either.

The invisible hand yanked me back once again, and I cried out as my head knocked hard against a rock.

“Let her go!” Nykor roared.

In a rush, he shifted into his dragon form and threw his head into the air, a bright blue blaze of icy fire pouring from his mouth. I watched in horror as all the branches above us froze in an instant. When he turned his furious gaze towards me, I couldn’t control my fear any longer.

I was going to die today.

CHAPTER6

Nykor

I cursed myself for choosing such a foolish location. My concern over the fragility of the small human female had made me impulsive. I should have flown further from the rift, but even so, I had thought I’d gone far enough to escape the reach of the wraiths.

This was a larger group of them than I was used to. One ice wraith was treacherous. A whole group of them was deadly, and right now, all their sights were set on Ella.

My senses were heightened in my dragon form, and up close like this, I could see the edges of the one that held her in its grasp. As far as I could tell, it had been a female once, but the deep reaches of Helheim had ruined any good that was once in her soul.

The wraith would be invisible to the human eye. Ella would have no idea what she was up against. I needed to save her. She didn’t deserve to be ripped from her world, thrown into the perils of mine, and be killed, all in the same day.

I growled, the deep rumble of it cascading through the snowy forest. The creatures of my realm knew to be afraid of me. The wraiths hadn’t been here long enough to learn that they needed to be scared, too.
