“Not just that, Ice King. That magic is not my own, but that of the Dark King. Should she die, her soul will belong to him.”

I stiffened, opening my mouth to argue, but the seer grinned and snapped her fingers before I could even utter a word.

The whole world went black.

CHAPTER15

Ella

“I care for her.”

I woke up with a start, my teeth chattering while my limbs prickled with agonizing pins and needles. My whole body shook with a strong chill, like I was thawing from a deep frost. Those four words repeated over and over in my head, like a song stuck on repeat, and there was no changing it.

“Thank the gods,” that same voice whispered.

Strong arms surrounded me with warmth, squeezing around me and chasing away the rest of the cold. I curled into that heat, shivering less and less as the seconds ticked by.

When I was finally ready, I opened my eyes. My heart swelled the moment I took in the man sitting over me, cradling my body firmly against his.

Nykor.

“You’re still alive,” he breathed. His expression was rapt with relief, his eyes soft with adoration as he gazed back at me. He dropped his lips to my forehead, kissing me. A gentle wave of magic sizzled through me, chasing away the last reaches of ice with fervor and replacing it with scorching heat.

“What happened?” I ventured.

“Your heart was pierced with a wraith’s tainted blade. I crossed into another world with you in order to save you.”

“Why?”

Instead of giving me an answer, his lips dropped to mine. This wasn’t the sweet, kindhearted kiss that he’d pressed against my forehead. This was the kiss of a lover, of a man claiming his mate for the first time. His lips on mine were persistent, and I kissed him back, tentatively at first.

It didn’t stay that way for long. His kiss burned at my lips, possessing me and claiming me once and for all. His roughness left my mouth more than sore, leaving me with the knowledge that I would feel that bruising hard kiss long after it was over.

I could feel the magic building between us, spiraling faster and faster until it exploded in a brilliant display of light deep inside my core. A thunderous boom of magic echoed throughout the glittering cavern, deafeningly loud yet comforting all the same.

“We are connected, you and I,” I breathed.

“So it would seem,” he whispered. His gaze appeared troubled, like he was saying the words but had not yet come to terms with their true meaning.

His knuckles grazed my cheek as his gaze searched mine. His other hand gripped at my body like he was afraid to let go.

“What just happened?” I asked.

He was opening his mouth to answer when a resounding set of footfalls pounded against the rock floor, echoing as they skidded to a halt inside the massive, glittering cavern.

“My lord,” the voice exclaimed breathlessly.

I turned my head to see a soldier standing in the entryway, his chest rising and falling in a fit to catch his breath. He folded his hands behind his back and lifted his chin, waiting for acknowledgement.

“Soldier,” Nykor said, reluctantly dragging his gaze away from me to peer back at the man.

“There’s more than we originally thought. The orcs bring reinforcement, and we’re losing ground, sire,” the soldier explained.

Nykor turned back to me, and I shook my head.

“I’m alright. Go,” I stated.

“Are you sure?” he questioned, his tone gentle and prodding.
