She blushed shyly as I washed between her thighs, and then flushed an even deeper red when I pressed the soapy cloth between her bottom cheeks. I also noticed that her nipples pebbled at the same time that her pupils dilated with passionate desire.

Her body was made to react to my touch, no matter how much it aroused or shamed her. I deeply enjoyed every moment of it. I told her about my past love, and she listened in thoughtful silence. When I was finished, she told me she understood, and that meant more to me than she could ever know.

Maybe she was the one after all.

That night, I put her to bed with my mouth between her thighs. I made her come several times, just enough to exhaust her so that when I tucked her back in, she’d sleep through the night.

I left my chambers, returning back to the strategy room where my council was waiting.

“King Nykor,” Brutus stated.

“It is an honor to speak with you again,” I answered. Brutus Ironhelm had been loyal to me since well before I had stepped away from my role as king. He had served as the King’s Hand for more than seventy years. Blessed with the long life of an elf, he looked no more than fifteen years older than when I’d first honored him with the role.

“I come to you with great news, my king. It would seem that the rift has at least partially mended, and the flow of Helheim’s soldiers has slowed down significantly. With your help, we have been able to push back the forces at our door.”

“Might I add my suggestion, King Nykor?” Magnus Silverbrook asked expectantly. He was the commanding general of all of Icegard’s forces and the reigning Master of War.

“Of course, Magnus.”

“Helheim’s forces have pulled back in a strategic retreat, waiting for reinforcements that slipped through the rift before its mending. Might I suggest we attack now and cut the head off the snake before it has time to lick its wounds and return to cause even more damage?”

“Do we have the numbers to substantiate such an attack beyond our walls?”

“If you might join us, my king, we would destroy them with ease,” Brutus explained.

I could see his point. The time to move was upon us, and any hesitation could prove fatal to my people if left unchecked.

“Then we move at sunrise. See to it that our wounded are given the best of care.”

I met with my council well into the night. By the time I finally returned to my chambers, the skies had long gone dark. I climbed into bed next to my Ella, curling up beside her and falling asleep with her in my arms.

When the sun rose, I pulled on my armor and made haste. I wrote a note for her to read when she woke, so she would know to expect me upon my return from battle. I took an extra minute to enjoy the beauty of her sleeping form before I placed it on the pillow beside her and swept out of the room.

Victory over Helheim’s forces came swiftly. Our attack caught them by surprise, and when they moved to escape my soldiers, my dragon’s fire cut off their escape. Our efforts were ruthlessly bloody, but by the time the sun set that day, the Dark King’s forces were annihilated. I returned to Glacierhold exhausted, and when I walked into my chambers, Ella was there waiting for me.

Coming back to see her radiant smile made it all worth it.

I knew that I would burn everything to the ground to keep her safe. The Dark King be damned. This was my realm, and she was my woman. Nothing in the world would be enough to take her from me.

CHAPTER17

Ella

In the weeks following the attack, the city slowly knitted itself back together. The scars of death couldn’t entirely be erased, but the people did the best that they could to mend them. Holes were patched within the walls, and buildings that had been destroyed in the chaos were rebuilt. The castle remained a healing ward for a long while, and slowly the beds emptied, and the soldiers healed. No longer needed on the battlefield, the king’s mages were able to refocus their efforts on helping those that were hurt, which sped up the process and saved a good deal more warriors as a result.

Nykor was busy often, his duties as king far more extensive than I originally thought they might be. He made certain to always make time for me, though, whether it be over a glass of wine or at night in his bed. I was left satisfied in every way.

Occasionally, Nykor was called away to deal with a few sparse remaining battalions of Helheim’s army. I would worry while he was gone, but as more time passed, the less these occurrences pulled him from the city, and from me.

In order to prepare me for those days without him, he introduced me to every member of his council, each one of them far more welcoming than I had anticipated. All of them seemed to showcase the slightest hint of relief that Nykor was back at the helm. None of them overtly hinted at it, but Brutus, the man who served as the king’s hand, seemed to scowl every time Valtimir’s name was mentioned.

Honestly, I liked him even more because of that. He always had a kind word whenever I sought out his advice. With his help, I started growing more and more comfortable with my life in this new place. Whenever I had a concern, I went to him, and he did his best to steer me in the most useful direction.

One morning, I woke up to the sun streaming in through the bedroom window. I turned my head to see Nykor’s side of the bed empty. He must have gotten up early to deal with castle business and let me sleep in. I could see the stark blue of the sky, and when I yawned and convinced myself to get out of bed to look outside, I saw that there wasn’t a cloud in sight.

The tiny ring of a bell sounded, and I looked back over my shoulder. Since no one but me and Nykor could pass through the threshold, deliveries were often left on a cart just beyond it. I grabbed my robe off a hook on the wall and slipped my arms into the satiny sleeves, tying it closed as I left the bedroom. I passed through the entryway to find Valencia waiting with a cart. There was a large white box tied with a light blue bow, and I raised an eyebrow with curiosity.

“The king ordered this to be sent to you this morning.” She dipped her head.
