I stared down at the mark, watching as it shifted in shape until it settled into the symbol of ice, the seal that represented Icegard and my own family line of succession. It blazed with blue fiery magic as I leaned down and pressed my lips against the mark, the taste of her blood still fresh on my tongue. I sighed as a tingling surge passed through our link, watching with keen interest as her flesh knitted back together with the help of our magic. In no more than a few seconds, the only thing left was the bright, blazing blue of my mark.

I’d lost control in the most beautiful way, and it had all been for her. My instinct had reigned free, and I’d given her the mark of the Dragonborne. The king of Blazelheim had found his one true fated mate, and so had I.

Now, I belonged to her, and she belonged to me.

“Mine,” I growled.

“Yours,” she whispered.

This woman had forced her way into my frozen heart despite everything I’d done to fight it. I’d shut myself off to love, but she’d gotten around that anyway. She’d even gotten through my reluctance to believe in prophecy because she could be nothing other than my destiny.

I saw that now.

Her heart pulsed with contentment, and the feeling passed through our magical link. I sighed softly and leaned over her, trailing kisses all around my mark.

“I love you, my Ella,” I murmured.

“I love you too, my Nykor,” she purred. Her words were like music to my ears, and I yearned to take her all over again.

The temptation was strong, and I gave in.

I fucked her slowly, enjoying her whimpers and protests that she was sore. Knowing that she couldn’t handle that much more, I pulled free from her and gathered her in my arms, enjoying the way she fit against me perfectly.

My one true mate.

With no warning, a bright, icy blue light expanded from a pinpoint in between us. Even though we were safely indoors, a rush of wind swept around us, and then the familiar feeling of an intense volume of magic swirled between us.

I recognized the type of magic after another second, and then the hazy outline of a portal appeared right in front of us. I didn’t step through. It dragged us in as though it had a gravitational pull all its own.

I gritted my teeth as the ground fell out from beneath me, the tortuous, familiar feeling of falling taking hold, and I heard Ella cry out. She squealed in surprise, but I held her tight against me as she wrapped her arms around my neck. A black void surrounded us as we fell, collapsing in as though we were underwater. She choked, likely unable to breath. I could feel her panicked fear through the bond, and I did everything I could to soothe her as we traveled like this.

Wind rushed all around us, whipping her hair back and forth, until at long last, my feet crashed into the ground. In an instant, I recognized where we were. We’d been transported straight to the rift.

Without warning, magic ripped Ella from my arms. She flew up several stories into the air, and I immediately shifted into my dragon form, instinctually needing to protect my mate. A vivid cerulean light blossomed from her center, and I squinted my eyes shut, trying to see her. The light remained far too blinding to discern anything at first. I tried to push up off the ground to get to her, but it was as if my ability to fly had been taken away from me. Bonds of mystical energy kept me tied to the ground. I still fought them anyway.

When she started to scream, I struggled harder, needing to get to her and keep her safe. She was my mate, and I would give up everything in the world to protect her.

The light around her whirled with ever increasing intensity, and she threw her head back. Was she in pain? Had prophecy been true all along and she was my one true mate, the sole human meant to become my Dragon queen? My heart swelled with more love than I thought possible.

My Ella was theone.

The brilliant blinding light imploded, and a great wave of magical energy radiated out from her fingertips, soaring across the snowy landscape with ferocious speed. I watched it roll over the mountains and beyond, and instinctually, I knew that it would destroy any remaining monsters from the dark realm of Helheim.

Ice sigils flared across her skin, a brilliant, whitish blue in color, and white feathery wings burst out of her back. The tips of her feathers were blazing with mystical blue power.

I stopped breathing, watching as my mate transformed before my very eyes. She floated well above me, her wings flapping behind her and keeping her aloft. There was a certain ethereal nature to her now, like she was an angel touched by the heavens and gifted a magical power so exceedingly rare that it wasn’t even written about in stories or books, or even sung about in song, a transformation only seen once thus far in the neighboring realm of Blazelheim.

Her arms were outstretched, and she stared back at me, her eyes flickering with icy magic. They were so much brighter than before. There would be no mistaking her magic now.

She turned her head towards the rift. It had torn open even further since I’d last been here. I had ignored my duty for far too long, and the magic of simply taking her wasn’t enough anymore. I could see that with my own eyes now.

Small glowing spheres appeared a few inches above her palms, increasing in size as they rotated with rising speed. When they had grown large enough, she wrenched her arms forward and threw them straight towards the rift.

I stared into the rift, only just now seeing a pair of glowing purple eyes. Instinctually, I knew it to be the Dark King. His face materialized for only a second. He was smirking, like he knew something I didn’t, and it took everything in me not to rush through the rift and destroy him myself to stop whatever it was that he had planned.

There wasn’t time for anything rash. The rift flashed bright white several times before it began to seal right before my eyes. Threads of golden magic stitched from the top all the way to the bottom, and then it sealed completely.

In silence, Ella descended back to the ground, her bare form weightless in the snow. The initial bright blue light started to fade, allowing me to truly see her for the very first time.
