My mother turned off her computer and stood. “You could’ve just called, sweetheart. I know you want to be with him and make sure he’s okay.”

I shook my head. “He’s fine. Besides, what I need to tell you isn’t something that should be done over the phone. I kind of want to see your face when you hear.”

She gasped. “Are you pregnant?”

I burst out laughing. “No. Why does everyone automatically ask that question?”

Her eyes lit up. “I don’t know. Maybe it’s because I’ve been dying to have grandchildren.”

“What am I hearing about grandchildren?” my dad asked as he walked down the hallway toward us.

He held out his arms and I hugged him tight. “Good. You’re here. That means I don’t have to say all of this twice.”

He let me go, his expression curious. “What’s going on?”

He went to stand by my mother and I smiled. “I’m back for good now. I have to go to Boston a couple of times over the next few weeks for a few surgeries, but after that, I’ll be here permanently.”

My mother squealed so loud it hurt my ears. She flung her arms around my neck, squeezing me so tight I could barely breathe.

“My baby’s finally coming home. This is the best news ever.”

She passed me over to my dad and he hugged me again. “What are your plans for a job? Did you find a position near here?”

“Not yet,” I answered, letting him go. “But I’m not worried about it. I know something will come up eventually. Which brings me to this next question,” I said, directing it to my dad.

He lifted his brows. “Go on.”

I bit my lip. “When are you planning on retiring?”

His smile faded and he glanced over at my mother. “Soon. Your mother and I have been trying to figure out what we’re going to do with this place,” he said, gazing around sadly at the office.

I grabbed his arms, drawing his attention back to me. “I have an idea and I think you’re going to like it. But first, there’s something else I need to tell you.” Their eyes widened and I couldn’t contain my excitement any longer. “Jensen and I are getting married!” I shouted.

My mom screamed again and this time I couldn’t breathe when she wrapped her arms around me. With them being this ecstatic, I couldn’t wait to tell them the rest.

Today was a fantastic day.It was as if my path had aligned with not only Jensen’s but my parents’ as well. My future had never looked so exciting, and now I couldn’t wait to let it all play out.

Closing my eyes, I moved under the hot water and let it pound against my skin. When I got back to Jensen’s after visiting my parents, I heated the chicken and rice casserole that was in his refrigerator. After that, we sat on his dock until the sun went down.

Now it was getting late, and we were going to watch a movie. I figured it was only fair to let Jensen pick since he just got out of the hospital. I was pretty sure it would be action-packed and full of suspense. However, I didn’t see him staying up too long tonight. Even though he’d stayed in a hospital bed the past few days, he didn’t get much rest, not with the nurses coming in every hour to check his vitals.

Once I was done in the shower, I listened to see if I could hear what Jensen was doing. There was nothing but silence. My stomach dropped and I dried off quickly, throwing on my pajamas even though my skin was still wet.

“Jensen,” I called out, hurrying out of his bedroom.

I’ve had this overwhelming sense of protectiveness over him ever since he got hurt. I didn’t want to lose him, and knowing I came close to that terrified the hell out of me.

The living room was pitch black, but as I rounded the corner, the candles Jensen had scattered around filled the room with a soft glow. The light flickered across his face, emphasizing his strong jawline and mesmerizing grayish-blue eyes. He was standing in the middle of the floor with his hands behind his back as if trying to hide something. My heart was still beating hard, so I placed a hand over my chest.

“It scared me when I didn’t hear anything,” I said, my voice breathless.

Jensen smirked. “I wanted this to be special.”

Laughing, I glanced down at my pink pajama pants and oversized T-shirt. “If I’d known you wanted to be romantic, I would’ve chosen some sexy lingerie.”

Jensen chuckled. “I like you like that. You look amazing.”
