“When are the auditions?” she asks, finally coming to a stop, breathless and beaming at me.

I seize the opportunity in her moment of stillness and take her into my arms again. I can feel her heart pounding through my chest.

“Auditions? Cara, the role is yours if you want it.”

Her eyes mist over as she looks up at me, lips trembling slightly. “Are- Are you sure?”

“Positive,” I reply with a laugh. “All you have to do is say yes.”

She grabs my face with both her hands, pushing up onto her toes as she brings me in for a kiss. Her lips crash into mine, open and wanting, her tongue claiming me fully. I tighten my hold on her, fingertips digging into her waist as I pull her closer. Deepen the kiss with my own hunger that’s been gearing to spill over.

It sucks the breath out of me, leaving me dizzy and excited, my crotch stirring with the need for something more. And that’s when my phone rings, ripping through the heat of the moment.

Cara tears herself from me with a disappointed groan. “You better get that.”

And it’s a good thing she forces me to, because when I pull out my phone, my father’s name is on the screen. I’ve been trying to do better in the work department after talking to my grandmother. To show him that I’m not the worthless kid he thinks I am.

“Yes,” I answer the call, sharing an apologetic look with Cara. Because I know what’s coming, why he’d call this late.

“I’ll be there in ten.”

“You have to go?” The crestfallen look on her face doesn’t make it any easier.

I nod slowly. “Sorry, but I have to sign some important papers back at the office. Legal was late in getting them ready and my father wants them sent off tonight.”

“Of course,” she kisses me on the cheek. “Do what you have to do. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Do what I have to do… Her words follow me all the way to my car. It feels kind of like fitting on a new suit and not quite liking the shape. But if I have any hope of succeeding at this whole ‘growing up’ thing, then I’m going to have to suck it up and get used to it.

Wow, I never thought the day would come when I’d be driving away from a beautiful woman so I can go do some boring work thing.

Edward was right. Gio Sanchez, one of the industry’s leading producers, finds me minutes after I exit the cloak room. I’m still coming down from the moment I shared with Edward when Miranda clasps my hand and drags me over to him.

“I’ve heard a lot of you,” Gio says in his thick Italian accent, cheeks glowing pink. I have no doubt that it’s thanks to the wine, and that the glass in his hand is by no means the first.

Thankfully, I’m hoping to pass off my own flush just the same. The last thing I need is for people in power to suspect I’m guilty of shenanigans at a work event.

“Thank you, Mr. Sanchez. I’m a huge fan of your work.” I move to shake his hand, but it’s the one holding his glass. Gio is gracious enough to lend me the other, which leads to an awkward moment of positioning and repositioning until we both just give up and laugh.

“I know it’s not out, but I’m your fan too,” Gio winks at Miranda.

I knew she must have had a hand in this. Where else would Gio Sanchez get to see my work?

She holds up her hands in surrender. “I was going to tell you,” she says to me. “I just wanted to be sure it was going to work out.”

“Work out?” I’m playing dumb, putting on my best act of the night as I shift my gaze between them.

Gio’s smile grows and he nods emphatically. “I want you, Cara. My film wants you.”

Miranda crushes me in a giddy side hug before I can even respond, and Gio bellows with laughter. The two of them are so caught up in their celebration that it infects me and soon I’m laughing with them.

Because who would say no to this? Two chances of a lifetime in a matter of months.

When Gio and Miranda finally leave me to digest it all, I’m reeling. My life is completely unrecognizable and it’s all because of Edward. The day I walked into that strip club to meet with him, everything changed.
