“Yes, I think so.” I placed my hands on my hips and paced. “Shit.”

“What’s going on?” We both looked over to find Emilia standing in the doorway of her office, her brows furrowed and her expression worried. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.” I reached for her and she came into my arms easily. “Nothing you need to worry about.” I thought quickly for a believable lie. “Someone in finance lost an important report, that’s all.”

“Again?” Emilia slid her arms around my waist and tipped her head up to look at me. “It can be restored by the tech team, can’t it?”

“I’m sure it can. Like I said, nothing for you to worry about.” I pressed my lips to hers in a soft, lingering kiss, one I wouldn’t have indulged in had we been standing in front of any other employee, but Marian was more than just our personal assistant. She was the closest thing we had to a mother.

Speaking of mothers, the idea of Janet being in our lives was enough for me to end my lip-lock with her daughter. I rested my forehead on hers, my hands coming up to cup her face, thumbs stroking her cheeks softly.

“You know I love you, don’t you, Em?”

Her lips brushed mine. “Of course I do.” She leaned closer, moving her mouth to my ear so Marian wouldn’t overhear. “How about we take a bath together when we get home? Order in, have some wine, make love.”

“Sounds perfect.” After one final kiss, I released her and waited until she went back into her office and the door had closed behind her.

Marian placed her hand on my arm. “What are you going to do?”

“Nothing. Not yet, anyway.” I patted it affectionately. “I’ll have Connor look into this woman first, make sure she’s who she says she is. Once I have facts, I’ll talk to Em.” It bothered me, thinking about the conversation I knew I was facing.

“If she is Emilia’s mother, what do you think she wants after all these years?”

“Money.” My expression was grim. “And she’s not going to get her fucking hands on a dime of it.”
