We’d trusted her to help run the clubs with Duncan. Relied on her to look after our dancers and staff. She’d been privy to confidential information as Duncan’s second-in-command, information plenty of our competitors and those who’d take great pleasure in bringing us down would have paid handsomely for.

We’d let down our guard, and now we were being burned.

I schooled my face into the tough, unflinching expression I often used in the boardroom. I would not show any fear or terror at what they’d done to me. I wouldn’t give them—especially Helena—the satisfaction.

“Unfortunately for you, Jason doesn’t do skanks.”

The words tumbled out of my mouth before I could stop them, and the murderous expression on Helena’s face told me it wasn’t my best move. She went to stand, but Janet flung an arm out in front of her.

“Ignore her, baby girl. She’s just trying to bait you.” Her tone was calm, as though soothing a small child. “You know we’ve already discussed this. You’ll have your shot with Jason as planned.”

I didn’t like the sound of that, not at all, but before I could say anything a large clang echoed through the warehouse. All three of us turned to look at the closed door.

Helena rose, grabbing her mother’s arm. “What the fuck was that?”

Janet frowned. “I don’t know. I’ll check it out, but I think we should leave here.” She glanced over at me. “Get up, Emilia. Put your shoes back on.”

I did as instructed, slipping my heels on. Helena opened one of the duffle bags and extracted a piece of plastic. I couldn’t work out what it was at first, but as she approached me, I realized it was one of those cable ties I’d seen in the movies.

“Hold out your hands, now.”

I didn’t think now was the time to defy them, so I did as I was told. Helena wrapped the plastic around my wrists and secured it in place, tight enough to cut off the circulation. “Ow.”

“Stop bitching. Be ready to move.” She shoved me toward the door so I was behind Janet but in front of her.

“You two stay here. I’ll go see what made the noise. Get your gun out, Helena.”

The younger woman went over to the duffle bag and pulled out an identical looking gun to the one her mother toted. “Don’t even think about moving unless I tell you to.” When I felt the cold steel pressed against my back, I froze in place.

Helena leaned in until her mouth was near my ear and I could feel her warm breath on my skin. “You so much as move a muscle without my say so and I won’t hesitate to shoot you in the head. Do you understand me?”

“Yes.” I didn’t doubt she’d follow through with her threat and I wasn’t going to do anything to provoke her.

Once Janet appeared to be satisfied everything was under control, she very quietly snicked the door open before throwing on the lights and stepping into the warehouse with her gun drawn.

When she suddenly clutched her neck and crumpled to the ground in front of our eyes, both Helena and I let out a loud gasp.
