Wyatt unfortunately knew that didn’t mean Miles hadn’t tracked her though. “What does he do for a living?”

Beth was silent for so long he wondered if she was ever going to speak. “He’s a lawyer.”

Fuck. That was not a good thing. If her ex was pissed off enough that she’d left him, there was no doubt he had the means to find her. He’d have contacts within law enforcement, including the police. Wyatt hoped he didn’t care enough that she was gone to bother, but he knew men like Miles. It was likely the motherfucker would hunt her down and make her go back to Arizona with him, where the violence would escalate.

Wyatt was never going to let that happen. He’d kill Miles if he had to, lawyer or not. “What’s his last name?”

“Why, you going to find him and beat him up?” He could hear the light, teasing lilt to her voice and that made him smile.

“I might.”

Beth kissed him. “His last name is Newman, but I don’t want you anywhere near him. Good riddance to him.”

Miles Newman. He made a mental note and would see what he could find out about this guy in the coming days. Try and find out if he was still in Arizona. Should be easy enough if he could locate which law firm he worked at.

But there was nothing Wyatt could do for now, so instead he rolled the woman in his arms underneath him, making her laugh until he kissed her breathless.

When he slid inside her again, her legs wide and her pussy wet, he vowed she would never be harmed. This woman, who he’d only known for a few weeks, had become precious to him and he would keep her safe.

No matter the cost.

ChapterFourteen

Wyatt woke before Beth the next morning, so he got up and made himself a coffee. Sitting on one of the high stools at the kitchen counter, he powered up his laptop and did a little research.

It hadn’t been hard to find a lawyer named Miles Newman in Arizona. A few keystrokes in a search engine had located the man who’d tormented her. Since Beth had mentioned her mother worked at a hospital in Flagstaff, he’d surmised Annika Adams hadn’t lived far from the hospital, and Beth hadn’t lived far from her mother. It only took him a couple of minutes to locate the law firm Newman worked at, and since the website had been good enough to list Newman’s direct phone number, Wyatt made a quick call.

His heart sank when he heard the voicemail message advising Miles Newman was on leave due to a family emergency, and if the call was urgent to ring the firm and a colleague would be able to help. That was not a good sign. It was hardly a coincidence Newman was on leave after Beth had left him.

He was obviously looking for her.

Fuck. Wyatt scrubbed a hand over his jaw. He needed to get ahead of this fucker so he knew what he was up against. He needed more information. Fortunately, he knew just the person to contact. Ben Parish, who lived on the West Coast, had been in the Navy with him as an analyst, and also happened to be one of the best hackers out there. There wasn’t a system Ben couldn’t get into, so if there was anyone who could dig up the dirt on Miles Newman, his old friend was it.

He glanced at the time and figured it was okay to call. Ben kept all sorts of weird hours and if he was asleep, he wouldn’t answer. Starting a video chat, it only took a couple of seconds before his friend answered.

“Well, look what the cat dragged in! Wyatt Kincaid, how the fuck are you?”

“Still breathing. How goes it, Ben?”

“Good.”

“I clearly didn’t wake you if your disheveled appearance is anything to go by.”

“Fuck you,” the redheaded man said with a laugh. “Nobody gives a shit what I look like. You still living in that little fucking town in North Carolina?”

“Silverbell Shore. Yep.”

“How’s the boat business going?”

“Really good. Summer is pretty busy.”

“That’s good, at least it keeps you out of trouble. You still playing recluse?”

Wyatt rolled his eyes and stuck his tongue out at his friend, which made the other man laugh. “I’m not a recluse.”

“Sure you are. How many times have you left old Silverbell Shore in the last three years to go on vacation?”

The answer was zero, and they both knew it. Yes, Wyatt had returned to Georgia for the holidays to see his family, but a vacation? No. “I’m doing fine.”
