Wyatt waited until her breathing had evened out, then followed her into slumber, his body wrapped around hers.

Keeping her safe.

ChapterTwenty-One

Wyatt woke the following morning before Beth, so he got up, took a quick shower, and got dressed as quietly as possible. After feeding Freya and changing her water, he grabbed a small plastic bag from his stash in a cupboard and a pair of tweezers, then went out the front door.

Freya ran off, presumably to pee. While she did that, he went back to the spot he’d discovered the previous night. The cigarette butt was still there, so he bagged it. Fortunately, he could send it to Ben for DNA testing and his friend would rush it through for results as quickly as possible. If the DNA matched Miles Newman, then at least he’d know for sure that asshole had found Beth.

But for now, he’d ask around town quietly. He’d found a photo of Miles on the internet after Beth had finally given him her ex’s full name. Just looking at his photo had made Wyatt want to knock the smug, supercilious look off his face.

If Newman dared to come near Beth again, Wyatt would do more than that.

The screen door opened, and Wyatt shoved the tweezers and baggie in his pocket before heading for the porch. Beth was a vision in pale blue. Her long, wet hair was curled up in a bun and she was wearing a simple, cotton knee-length dress which showed off her gorgeous figure.

“God, you’re beautiful.”

His loving eyes drank her in, lingering in some places. Places he’d explored thoroughly with kisses and licks. When his gaze finally met hers, he could see the faint blush on her cheeks and the desire in her eyes. She knew exactly what he was thinking, and he grinned unabashedly.

“Good morning, handsome.”

He bounded up the stairs, stopping on the one below where she stood so they were almost eye level, and kissed her. “Good morning. How did you sleep?”

She placed another kiss on his mouth. “Like a baby.” Her lips trailed over his cheek to his jaw, dropping soft kisses along his jawline. “You?”

“I always sleep well when you’re next to me.” That was the truth. While his nightmares had lessened over the years, he hadn’t had a single one since Beth had started sleeping in his bed with him.

“Good.” She ran a hand through his hair affectionately. “You need restful sleep.”

He kissed her neck and throat before taking her mouth in a long, hot kiss. “How about we eat some breakfast, take Freya for a walk around the lake, then hit the bookstore?”

Her eyes lit up at his suggestion. He’d never known a woman who loved reading as much as Beth did, and he’d been able to piece together that Miles had restricted how much and what type of books she could read. That fucker. If he ever laid eyes on the man, his eyes wouldn’t be the only thing being laid on him.

Wyatt wanted to indulge Beth’s every desire. Reading made her happy, so he’d buy every single book in the world if that was what she wanted.

She kissed his cheek. “Sounds good to me! If we stop by the grocery store, I’ll pick up some things to make dinner.”

“We can do that. I’ll make you breakfast. How do waffles sound?”

“Delicious.”

Wyatt turned and whistled for Freya, who suddenly appeared through a copse of trees. He sometimes allowed her to frolic outside, especially in the warmer months, but he wanted to keep sight of her.

Once both his girls were inside, he took one last, long gaze around his property. The lake was still, apart from the occasional ripple. There was no sign of anyone lurking in the background. But Wyatt was on high alert. He’d be watching. Waiting. For now though, he had his woman to cook breakfast for, so he went inside and locked the screen door. Just in case.

After breakfast, all three of them went for a long walk around the lake. Freya bounded ahead of them happily, trying to catch flying creatures by jumping into the air, her jaws snapping madly. Her prey was too smart to actually be caught, and she soon gave up, turning her attention to the lake instead. She skimmed in and out of the water, pawing the surface and scaring away any fish brave enough to venture close to the edge.

Beth laughed at the dog’s antics, her fingers wrapped around Wyatt’s, and her joy made him smile. She hadn’t done a lot of smiling in the first couple of weeks she’d been in Silverbell Shore, so he relished these moments.

Bringing their joined hands up to his mouth, he kissed the back of hers. “I think it’s going to be a hot summer this year.”

“Sure seems like it, but you have a very large pool to play in.” She nodded in agreement and inclined her head toward the lake.

“And an outdoor shower big enough for two.”

Her eyes glazed over, no doubt thinking about the fun they could have in it together. He couldn’t stop himself pulling her close and kissing her deeply, long enough for his dick to harden. Once they got back to the cabin, she didn’t need much persuasion to take off her pretty blue dress and ride him hard until they both exploded.

Afterward, they took Freya with them to the bookstore and the grocery store. She went inside both businesses with them, sticking close to Beth’s side. It was almost as if Freya knew something was wrong and was on high alert. Wyatt picked up a large, meaty bone for her to enjoy for dessert as a thank-you. He loved his dog and was grateful she’d found a forever home with him.
