She kissed his lips softly, slowly, infusing every ounce of love she felt for this man into it. “I love you, Wyatt.”

“I love you too.”

He closed the door and jogged around to the driver’s side. It didn’t take long for them to reach the doctor’s office, and they were ushered straight in. After the doctor examined her hands carefully and removed a few small shards that had been caught underneath the skin, she bandaged them up and advised Beth to keep them dry until the following day.

It was only as they were leaving that Beth realized she couldn’t use her insurance, because it was tied to Miles and it would give him something else to hold over her. Shit. She hated to think of how much this was going to cost.

When they reached the reception desk, however, Wyatt pulled out his wallet and handed over a card to the woman seated behind it. “Wyatt?”

He leaned over toward her. “It’s okay, honey. It’s taken care of.”

She wrapped her arms around his, careful not to touch him with her hands which had now begun to ache. She didn’t deserve Wyatt Kincaid.

Once they got home, Beth sat on the sofa while he filled a glass with water. After helping her drink it, he placed it on the coffee table and opened his arms. She fell into them, resting her head on his shoulder. Freya hopped straight onto the sofa, curling up on the other side. “What happened, Beth?”

She took a deep breath before responding. “He was there, Wyatt.”

She felt him stiffen. “Who was there?”

“Miles.” Her voice was but a mere whisper. “I saw him. He was standing at the other end of the aisle. I’m not crazy.”

“I know you’re not crazy, honey. If you saw him, he was there.” He kissed the top of her head. “I’ll call Ben and get him to look at cameras, see if we can identify his car. Fuck. How did he find you?”

Tears spilled down her cheeks as the enormity of the situation sank in. “I don’t know. I’ve done everything I could to cover my tracks. It doesn’t make any sense.”

“No, it doesn’t. We’ll figure it out, somehow. Nobody here in town would have said anything.” He released her, sat up, and pivoted so he could look at her properly. “I need you to listen to me. He can’t hurt you, Beth. I won’t let him.”

“This isn’t your fight.”

“We’re a team, you and me.” A loud bark had Wyatt amending his statement. “And Freya. The three of us. Let me ask you a serious question. Do you still want to stay here in Silverbell Shore? Stick around with me and Freya, see where it takes us?”

Beth didn’t even have to think about it. She wanted to make a life with Wyatt, one she hoped would lead to marriage. She nodded, bringing up her hands to wipe away the tears, only to remember they were bandaged. Wyatt cupped her cheeks and wiped them with his thumbs. “Yes. I love you both and want to stay here for good.”

His grin warmed her all over. “I’m really glad to hear that.” The lingering kiss he gave her was sweet, and she breathed him in.

“So what do we do now?”

Her question had Wyatt running a hand over his jaw, the stubble making her heart skip a beat. He was such an attractive man and he was hers.

“I honestly don’t know yet. I need a little time to think, but a good place to start would be to make a few calls, see if anybody else has spotted him in the last couple of days. He’d blend in easily enough with all the tourists, but someone might have noticed him.”

“What do you want me to do?” Beth felt useless, sitting on the sofa with bandaged hands while the man who’d tormented her was out there somewhere.

“I want you to rest. I’ll order in some dinner and we’ll talk about our next move. I won’t leave you out of anything, Beth. I promise.”

“Thank you, sweetheart.” She raised her face for his kiss, and then watched as he called in an order for some food.

“Let’s go grab our order.”

Beth got up immediately, fearful about leaving his side for any length of time. She was on high alert the whole time they were out, looking at everybody carefully to see if she could spot Miles. He was nowhere to be found, but she knew he hadn’t gone anywhere. He wouldn’t leave Silverbell Shore until she agreed to go back to Arizona with him, and she wouldn’t put anything past him.

Miles Newman always got his own way.

Well, not this time. Beth was not going to let him drag her away from a life that was full of potential. Now that she’d had a taste of it, she didn’t want to leave. Ever.

By the time they got home again, she was exhausted in every way possible. Physically. Mentally. Emotionally. She managed to eat a little, but her appetite was nonexistent. Wyatt coaxed her into eating a little more than she had, but she was grateful he didn’t push too hard. She did, however, drink two glasses of cool, crisp white wine, which helped settle her nerves a little.

When they made love later that night, Beth tried her hardest to focus on the man moving inside her, not the one who threatened to blow her entire world apart. She didn’t think she’d be able to sleep much, but when Wyatt curled his body around hers, she felt safe enough to close her eyes.
