I wait a bit and another text comes in.

Can’t wait. See you then.

I smile and pocket my phone thanking God that I decided to wear this skirt today.

I make my way to Luca’s office with a mixture of excitement and dread. I knock once and open the door. He looks up at me and the creases in his forehead immediately smoothn out.

“Hi.”

I say for lack of anything better, he’s looking at me so intensely, almost like he’s trying to see into the depths of my soul.

“How was he?” He asks and my stupid, man filled brain fails to process what he’s saying.

“Who?” I ask stupidly and he raises an eyebrow.

“Ryan, the person you just went to see I suppose.”

Oh, crap. He must think I’m really stupid now.

“Yes, Ryan, he’s better, good, great. Um, he’s recovering.” I stutter my way through that reply and I cringe so hard but Luca only nods, glad to hear that. Take a seat Evelyn.

I think I might be obsessed with the way he says my name, it rolls off his tongue in that deep way that makes me feel like he isn’t just saying it. I sit across from him and he slides a fine in my direction.

I look at him in confusion and open the file, flipping through it and my brows rise in realization.

“Oh my God! Is this…”

“The total number of people who have gotten sick since last week, yes.”

“One hundred and sixteen? That’s a lot of people.” I say, I didn’t know it had gotten this bad, it started out with just a few families but now more than a hundred? It was spreading.

“Yes it is, and if we don’t get this guy, or woman or whoever the hell it is responsible for these attacks, a lot more people are going to get sick.”

“I didn’t know it was this bad, I mean I knew it was not good, but… this is a lot of people.”

Luca nods and takes the file from me.

“I’ve just concluded a meeting with the captain of our police precinct, they are doing everything they can to catch this person but whoever they are, they’re proving very elusive. We have no leads, none. The only suspect we had, a seventeen year old high schooler, he was caught vandalizing a store but it turns out that was just his mothers store and he was acting out. Other than that, we have nothing else.”

“That sucks.Luca, I think that whoever this person is, they’re doing this because of you. The attacks started the same time you announced that you would be running for s second term as mayor and they have not stopped since then, I think this has something to do with your campaign.”

“You’re right,it does. I began to think so after the first few attacks, they were always timed to fit in with my press conferences and campaign movements.”

He said, reclining in his chair.

“Then we should do something, we can not let them keep doing this, innocent people are getting hurt.

“We cannot take any action now because we don’t know who exactly it is doing this, it will be foolish to throw out accusations without having any backbone of evidence to support our claims. The media, and everyone else might not see it the way we are seeing it.”

“So basically our hands are tied?”

“I’m afraid so.”

My shoulders fall at that, this is crazy, how can we sit back and just do nothing while this jerk roams around freely?

He stands and walks around the seat to stand in front of me.

“We won’t just do nothing Evelyn, the night watch program we’ve set up is working, the people are becoming more alert, everyone is looking out for each other, it’s a lot safer than before and we have you to thank.”
