There was just an unusual glow on Ryan’s face this morning and I could only attribute that to two things: He was having incredible sex with that police officer, or he knew I had some gossip and he wanted to hear it fully from the horse’s mouth. Gosh, Ryan loved horses. If he was just going to pry I knew what to say instantly. I would bring up the cop and ask if he had a master dick like a horse. I bet that was guaranteed to make Ryan squeal.

“Hey, how are you doing?” He asked me, his face beaming. I really wanted to point out the glow on his face but I figured I’d just do that later.

“I'm cool. But you know who is definitely cooler?” I knew what he was about to say. “You. I saw you and dear Mr. Silvestri at you know what? On you know where? Doing you know what?”

“oh, please, you’re such a blabbermouth. Nothing happened.”

“sure you can tell that to the vegetation that heard your screams.”

“please Holden is still in the hospital. I need to go visit him.”

I picked up my bag and left him there, grinning. But, then, he called me back.

“what?”

“haven’t you heard?”

“Holden’s still not woken up yet"

“How did you know that?”

“I just do. Now you need to get me up to speed with the happenings at work.” He snapped his fingers. “what’s the dish girl?”

Ryan never ceased to amaze me. How quickly he could turn a glum situation into something very exciting. He was that interesting like that. He was not going to ask me about what had been going on in the office but I was going to tell him. I needed him then and he needed to know how much I missed him when everything was going on. I filled him in on the happenings at work. How things had been weird having only me and Luca at work, alone. The sparks that flew in the air, the tension that erupted simultaneously. And just the glares between us that we kept exchanging.

I asked him if he remembers when Luca tried to turn me against Holden and he said yes and I started to explain from there. He was shocked.

“So, you guys had sex right here? In this office?”

“Well, almost. The first time I just bailed.”

“And when was the second time?”

“The second time was just before Stella came in.”

“so you just went to third base?”

“Nah, first base.”

“So you went beyond kissing?”

“Oh my god boy, I shouldn’t be telling you these. You’re such a gossip.” I laughed and he chattered away. And it was at that moment that Luca entered. He looked so elated I didn’t know what was going on with him. He probably had good news from the mayor that he was going to share with us. I couldn’t wait to hear. He looked at me so charmingly I felt the temperature drip a few degrees. I think I sensed him surge forward to me, or maybe it was in my head. It also seemed as though he got darker during the trip. Honestly, I couldn’t believe it had been three days already. Oh, how time flew. Who was I kidding? I spent everyday thinking about him, how he would laugh at my jokes and hear me speak. How he would listen and run his fingers through my hair, how he would smile at me and make me feel like I was the only one in the room with him. Like, how he was doing now. Someone would think Ryan wasn’t there with us, but oh, boy he was. And he was definitely feeling the heat, because you know, I was.

ChapterTwenty-Five

Luca called us for an emergency meeting into his office; Ryan and I. My heart was beating fast. But, considering how he’d entered smiling, I knew it was going to be good news. I just didn’t want it to be the sort of good news that was going to break our relationship you know?

Growing up, I had watched dozens of sitcoms with my mother. There were key factors in most of them. A steamy romance, a group of friends, a dummy and amongst those, there was always a time where the couple everyone rooted for would suddenly break up die to distance. I knew my life wasn’t a sitcom, and neither was it a Shakespearean play. But, there were some days were it just felt like one and I couldn’t deny it. Like, today. Something deep within me wanted to ask Luca if he was going to be leaving to Washington DC. If he got the endorsement. But I didn’t want to seem to in love with him. At least, I knew that was not a good look. So, I paused wherever I was, took and deep breath, because I just knew what I needed to do and I listened to him.

“so, I got the endorsement by the president.” Oh, wow, exactly how I thought. He was going to leave me just when I had started to fall in love with him. Just when I was fully in love with him. I knew he was going to see my full countenance. I let it show on my face so it would pierce him just where I intended to. In that cold, bare heart of his. Then he continued talking. “I can’t even begin to explain how happy I am right now. But I thank both of you. You’ve been with me for the past two years.”So, apparently Ryan was hired around the same time I was. “You’ve seen me in my lowest and You’ve just helped me through really dark moments.”

Ryan raised his glasses, and objected. “Incredibly dark moments.”

“Exactly. But you guys have stuck with me still. I couldn’t be more grateful.”

It was a nice toast, really. His words appealed to the very core of my being. And even though I was just not in the mood because I felt like I was losing him, I still wanted him too.

“Ryan, can I have a moment with Eve, please?”
