“So, where did you park?”

“At Corduroy Lane!”

He let out a short-lived laugh again. “Yeah, I know. Just wanted to hear you fuss.”

“Okay, you’re just crazy.” I started walking away.

“But, let me take you.”

“No, I can find my way. I don’t drive around with crazy folk.”

“Oh, don’t be like that. I promise I’m not that crazy. While driving, at least.”

“I’ll take my chances.” And I would have, but my feet hurt badly. I just needed him to beg one more time, so I could grudgingly let him, because after all, I knew what he wanted.

But then, he started walking to the car. “I’m just going to remain there in case you change your mind.” And, he entered it, and left the one door adjacent him open.

Wait, did he expect me to just follow him into his Porsche?I turned the other way. I was not going to give him the benefit of the doubt.

“Hey, come on,” he called out as he cruised. “Just enter. I cannot have you walk.”

“You need to say please.”

“Please? For you to enter my car?”

“Okay, then, quit disturbing me.” I was going to make him beg, and I was not sure if he was actually going to.

But, then, he genuinely did. “Alright, please.”

“Sure.”

* * *

The house was set apartfrom the neighborhood, on a valley that elevated it so as we drove up the path, we could really feel ourselves going up. I thought that was insanely weird, the positioning of the house, how it seemed crooked, how it was evenly and properly structured, despite the slope. Other than that, everything seemed perfect.

The furnishing was explicit, however. Umber-colored sofas littered the house, in an arrangement too painstaking to ignore. And between them lay matching stools. I looked up and I saw it had beautiful high arched windows, with velvety drapes framing the windows, and the lace inner curtains remained drawn, allowing daylight to enter while rendering the spine-tingling view over the town a blur. And then, there was the fireplace that rose to the ceiling setting the entire room to a bedazzling perfection. It was so surreal. A week ago, I was still living with my mum, struggling to make ends meet, and today, here I was, in a house big enough for a family of five, with a foyer that could accommodate the Serengeti Plant at the foot of a cast, and a curving staircase that may had just led me to heaven.

“I’m guessing you’ve never lived somewhere this big.” Holden interrupted my daydreaming. “No offence.”

But I didn’t take offence. I barely even heard him. This house was just too fancy for real. The sight, coupled by its décor, had taken my breath away. “Actually, you are right. This is the nicest place I’ve lived in.”

“Well, here you are now. Better make the best of it. I promise you’re going to love this town.” He retreated towards the door, bidding me farewell with the warmth in his eyes.

“You’re going?”

“Well, yeah. I promised to get you home safe, and I’ve done that.” He placed his hand on the door knob, then turned to me. “Unless…”

“Yes?” What did I even want him to say? I was not sure why I wanted this stranger to stay, but I did. Well, I didn’t want him to leave just yet. But, I didn’t need any help around. Everything had been organized from top to bottom. The kitchenette, the dining, the bedrooms, everything! But I was still in a twist. My stomach churned with a longing I couldn’t fully express. It called out to him, with bated breath, like an appeal to quell a sated seduction. I needed him to step away from the door, and race to me. For that was what my hunger needed, that was what my heart desired, and that was sent my panties into a frenzy.

But, he winked, stepped out, and by the time I strutted to the windows, I saw his car, zooming off, feathery plumes of smoke, trailing behind it.

There was only one thing I could do after that; get my shit together. Tomorrow was going to be a Thursday. I knew I had to head to work and act like I knew what I was doing, and that could only be done if I took full control of my day. And the first thing that could keep me from doing that was if Holden Grant, or whatever his name to keep roaming in my mind, because that would only lead to the one thing I needed to avoid so bad. Drama. So, the first thing I had to do was to let him go.

And as soon as I did, I took an extremely buoyant breath from the depths of my lungs and picked up my boxes to my room. I stayed in there, arranging every single thing to my taste, so by the time I was done, I stared at my creation and smiled. Once again, I was feeling incredibly optimistic about my move here. I was like Holden’s Porsche, but without brakes. Nothing could dare stop me now.

And like it was all a joke, the knock on the door came. I opened it, and there he was. Holden.

“Did you forget something?”
