“I’m putting Kelly on the train tomorrow morning, so, sure, as long as we can get a giant bucket of popcorn and some peanut M&Ms.” Her favorite snack.

His lips twitched. “That’s pretty specific. You want both?”

“Well, I’ve created the perfect combination. You put the peanut M&Ms into the popcorn. It’s the perfect blend of salty and sweet. You’ll love it.”Keep the conversation light-hearted.

“Whatever you want. I’ll pick you up at six thirty. And if that isn’t enough dinner, we can always grab a bite afterward.” Nick laughed.

She returned his grin. “Perfect.”

He clasped her chin and brushed a feather-light kiss against her lips. “See you tomorrow, beautiful.”

And, yes, her heart skipped a beat.

CHAPTER9

Sophie checked on Kelly, who was sleeping with Zack curled up at her side. Satisfied her BFF was resting comfortably, she quietly pulled the bedroom door shut.

Stretching her arms overhead, she grimaced at the stiffness setting in from the accident. Time to take advantage of the quiet and percolate on the situation with Mr. Nicholas Morgan. And what better place to do it than in a long hot bath?

Once she’d settled into the tub, complete with fragrant bubbles and a yogurt face mask, she closed her eyes and dropped her head back onto the bath pillow. The silky water caressed her skin, and the warmth soothed her muscles. Heaven.

A moment later, her phone rang. When she glanced at the display, Nick’s number popped up. Already?

“Hi beautiful, what are you up to?” His voice was husky.

Her breath hitched. “I’m up to my collarbone in bubbles. You?”

He exhaled a deep breath. “Seriously? You’re killing me, Sophie. I can be there in five minutes?”

“What happened to getting to know each other? Taking it slow?” The heat in the bathtub ratcheted up about fifty degrees––she fanned her face with one hand.

Nick chuckled. “I’m only teasing, I wanted to check in on you and Kelly. Are you sure you’re still okay?”

Sophie’s chest tightened. “I’m okay. She’s sleeping and will be fine. Thanks again for all your help—you’ve been amazing.”

“You’re sure there’s nothing you need?”

Besides you here to wash my back? “Yes, I’m sure.”

“Now tell me if those bubbles have started to melt?” he whispered.

“We are so not discussing my bubble bath. I’ll see you tomorrow.” Warmth pooled low in her belly.

“Good night, beautiful.”

She hung up, her eyelids fluttered shut, and she settled back into the steamy water. Okay, no question their chemistry was scorching and no question now that she would succumb to temptation. A fling with Nick was just what she needed.

A few moments later, the phone rang again. The man was nothing if not persistent. Without opening her eyes, Sophie reached for her phone. “No, you are not joining me in the bubble bath.”

“Sophie.”

She jolted upright, and water splashed over the tub’s edge. Unable to suppress the bile rising in her throat, her fingers curled around the phone. Only one man had that smug, superior tone.

“Doug, what do you want?” she said, her voice flat.

“Sophie, I’ve missed you so much. How are you, baby?” Her ex-fiancé crooned.

Her fingers trembled, and a chill flashed down her spine, despite the hot bath water. “Baby? Are you kidding me right now? How dare you call me? What part of you stood me up at the altar gives you the nerve to contact me?”
