He was still taking in her words, dazed and afraid, when she rose to her feet and put her hand on his cheek, stroking his beard. The look in her eye told him one thing and one alone:

She wanted him, but, he needed to know and understand the gravity of things before they took that next step. The desire and fervour in her eyes nearly took his breath away, but…

She needed assurances, and until he could give them to her…

“Thank you for dinner, handsome.”

She left his side and headed to bed.

The next day, after a sleepless night (on his part), they made love on the rug downstairs.

There was no stopping it.

She was beautiful. Abused.

And needed him.

He was hers.

She was his.

That’s all that mattered.

He said fuck it to everything else.

Even though he knew, one day, for sure, Eric would come for Flora.

Eric, the man who’d bathed in Caelan’s misery following Dani’s death.

Rather than tell his friend to get help and get sorted.

Nae, instead, he’d watched Caelan implode.

And deep down, Caelan had always wondered…

Was there a moment, when his back was turned, where Dani had been vulnerable and Eric had swept in…

He couldn’t think about that now.

His urge to be with Flora obliterated all else.

They’d deal with it all as it came.

Whatever.

Chapter Forty-One

~ Caelan ~

He would never tell her that he had been unable to reconcile it then, and was still having trouble now. He knew it was the truth—she had actually killed Jimmy—but he hadn’t wanted to believe it on first hearing, and it had been even harder when she’d gone into more detail. Of course, he believed his wife, but it wasn’t pretty. He couldn’t stand to think of the violence she’d had to use to save herself, the way Jimmy must have looked, the whole… sordidness of it. It was so difficult to comprehend. So, a lot of the time, he tried not to. He would tell himself that it didn’t really matter about the past…

Yet he spent the next morning telling her about all the times he’d scuppered her would-be killers. Similar situations to the first one. Except, he didn’t always have Hamish as backup. Sometimes his buddy would be on operations; other times the logistics were too complex, given Hamish had a family, too.

Caelan was there whenever a bird whispered in his ear that another assassin had been put on Flora’s case. Drake had been the only one who’d met a violent end, the rest were easily persuaded not to bother, having heard what’d happened to him.

All that time he was watching her, he never for one moment believed she had actually killed his uncle. At first, he’d looked upon her as an heiress, an unsuspecting victim of Sherry’s and an innocent. Of course, part of it was lust, desire… then love that kept him following Flora around. Perhaps curiosity, too.

Maybe a pull that was unexplainable.
