I sucked in breath. “We need Eric here, too.”

Caelan looked up at the ceiling, his chest expanding with a big, deep breath. “I messaged him earlier.”

That gave me such relief. “Thank you.”

“We dinna ken what we face. How far she’s got already. Who she has helping her. We dinna ken shit and it’s nae good.”

I tipped my head back and snorted. “Well now we know where you got the cleverness from. It probably wasn’t your father.”

“Aye, canna disagree.”

Neither one of us was really hungry for the cold pasta salad in our bowls. We both kept staring longingly at our glasses of wine, more than at the food—and neither of us had particularly eaten since breakfast.

“Caelan?”

“What is it, honey?”

“Tell me it’s going to be all right.”

“Sure it is,” he said, and kissed my head. “Ye ken I’ll make sure o’ it.”

In the middle of the night, I was woken by a body climbing into bed with me.

I knew that smell, and it wasn’t Caelan’s.

Caelan had been too antsy earlier to come to bed—and had vowed to sleep on the couch downstairs to be on guard.

The windows upstairs were all shut and locked, the aircon in full operation.

“I’m here,” he said softly, and I curled around him, burying my face in his shoulder.

“Thank you for coming.”

“You knew I would.” He kissed my hair and held me close. “It’s all going to be all right. I promise.”

“You promise?”

“Absolutely, baby.”

I didn’t hesitate and fell right back to sleep, because there had never been a shoulder more comfortable to snuggle into than his.

When I woke the next day, I knew it was early because the baby wasn’t cooing yet, the room was still bathed in shadows and it was cool enough that Eric was the only warm thing near me. Because of the aircon, this was the time of night when I’d usually have to bundle myself up in sheets and blankets.

“Are you awake?” I whispered.

“I am now.” Eric was an awfully light sleeper.

He rubbed the sleep from his eyes and I looked down into his face, seeing shadows. He’d been busy, then.

“What do you know?” I asked.

“We were right,” he said unhappily.

“You were right,” I corrected.

“You knew it, too.”

I closed my eyes. “He may not survive this.”
