“She wants Blake’s attention but also, his.” He pointed at Caelan. “Because he betrayed her, married the enemy, took her birthright, is a hero, escaped the curse of their family. She despises him because he represents everything she hates. There’s no escape for her and she can’t handle it. She’s got nothing left to lose. Nothing. All she wants is revenge on the people she can’t control anymore. And you’re the key, Flora. Through you she can get to Blake and him.”

I rubbed the back of my neck. “Part of me wants to head back to London, just to see what she does.”

“No,” said Caelan, without a second’s thought.

“I agree,” said Eric harshly. “Scum everywhere.”

“Then what do we do?” I asked, throwing my hands around.

“This is what we’re built for, Flora,” said Eric calmly. “So we wait.”

Caelan dipped his head in agreement.

“We’re the woman’s worst nightmare,” said Caelan darkly. “Together, we’re impenetrable.”

“Okay,” I said softly. “Okay.”

Chapter Forty-Eight

Time ticked by so slowly. They’d take it in turns sleeping upstairs with me but while Eric and I would only cuddle, Caelan would want me more and more fiercely every night. Concerned we might be overheard, we didn’t do any of the freaky stuff, just good old-fashioned foreplay, oral and then missionary. Caelan was becoming obsessed with us getting pregnant again, and I got it, I did. He was holding my legs up as he finished, but truthfully, I was starting to enjoy it less because it was becoming about one thing: him impregnating me again so that I wouldn’t leave him.

The nights when I’d lie in Eric’s arms, waiting for him to make a move, I’d yearn for that escape I’d once had with him. I would feel him trembling with longing, too. We’d stare at one another, stroke each other’s faces, smile. I was glad he was safe and alive.

When my normal period arrived again, I’d never been so glad—but while Caelan scowled as he walked in on me sticking a sanitary towel in my knickers, Eric only hugged me harder that first night I was on. I admit, I let myself get carried away and we kissed and cuddled, me with just knickers on, him naked. I stroked him to orgasm and it was amazing how hard he came for me.

“Still love you, Flora,” he said.

I really didn’t know what to say in return, I was so confused. I think we all were. My husband was downstairs half the time allowing me to spend the other half of my time with his best mate who I’d slept with before and who I’d admitted to being in love with, too. Caelan had warned me he wouldn’t share again… but…

What the hell was happening?

“It’s okay,” Eric soothed, stroking my face.

“Nothing is okay.”

“He won’t relax until it’s done with.”

“Until she’s back in prison?” I snickered. “Look how that turned out.”

“He can’t kill his mother,” he said, “he already killed his father.”

“I know,” I sighed.

“I’ll handle it,” said Eric. “Let me handle it.”

“That’s if she even finds us. It feels like we’re the ones in prison right now.” Taking food deliveries at the gate which had to be checked, never leaving the villa, only using the pool and gardens during the daytime. Extra guards having to be posted at the perimeter. Never being able to go for a proper walk with the buggy.

I yearned for home! So badly.

“What if this is a trauma he will never move on from?” I said to Eric, rubbing my chest as I became anxious. “It’s clear the woman is capable of anything. She did some Jedi mind trick on Caelan to make him kill his father. Yet he won’t… can’t end her.”

Eric rubbed his hands up and down my back and kissed me lightly on the lips. “Neither one of us will ever know what it’s like to be him carrying that. That sickness. That hatred for her and for himself because she made him do it. Conned him into it. Coerced. Whatever you want to call it. She’s killed who knows how many. She’s a murderer. He isn’t. He’s weak against her. It’ll have to be me.”

I sighed and bundled myself deeper into him. “I wish we could fuck right now. You feel safe, Eric. He’s not always safe.”

He kissed my forehead repeatedly. “Isn’t that why we love him?”

“I guess,” I giggled.
