“Soon we’ll be back home altogether. Start something new. I swear it.”

“Aye, but…”

“She will see the truth. I ken her better than she kens herself.”

“While that may be true, the lengths he might go to…”

“Aye, we’ve been here before.”

Eric had done this before, more than once. He would pretend Caelan’s girlfriends were in danger and make them feel safer with him. Most of the time the lass would figure out who it was Eric was really in love with. Few fell for his act. The funny thing was Caelan was never serious about any of those girls, but the slightest whiff of one of them falling for Caelan, and Eric would swoop in and shit all over it. Caelan used to laugh it off. Not this time.

He never thought in a million years Flora would be the one to fall for it, but perhaps that was on him. Caelan had left her alone with the baby… and she was still hurting about Jimmy, Sherry… so much.

“I’ll speak to ye when I speak to ye,” said Caelan.

“Aye, stay sharp, lad.”

“Dinna fash, Harold.”

He hung up.

Caelan surveyed the scene, shaking his head. He’d seen things these past few weeks… but now he faced this. After everything he’d given in life, over and over, and always, he seemed to get treated like shit.

He saw the car nearby, took the number plate and fed it into a database on his phone he wasn’t meant to have access to. Within seconds, a result came back.

Hire car. An overdue hire car.

He got the details of who’d last hired it and hunted for more information about this person.

A Syrian national. Former asylum seeker. Someone desperate enough. Someone who’d only been able to hire this piece of shit car due to their dodgy credentials.

So Eric had hired a bunch of dickheads to scare the fuck out of Flora?

What the hell was going on?

Gutting Eric would be too easy.

“Nae, wouldna like to make it easy on him,” Caelan said to the ghosts.

He would fight for his and Flora’s love. He would purge them of this annoyance, once and for all. This time Eric had gone too far. His blind obsession had to stop.

No more Mr Nice Guy.

Caelan would punish them both.

And he would win the girl.

Because winning was what he knew.

And losing?

He didn’t know what that was.

Chapter Eighteen

~ Flora ~

Three days since the event, I woke knowing something else—someone else—was in the room alongside us. I’d know that smell anywhere. His saltwater and pepper scent, that fresh shampoo and sandalwood soap.
