Becca’s gaze swept up Cameron’s body. She quickly turned away. No matter how good-looking he was, she couldn’t afford to be attracted to him. She had to keep hold of her senses and stay on top of her game. Falling for Cameron would get them both killed. She knew that better than anyone.

Maybe Marcie was right; maybe she just needed to date a stranger. Something super low-key. Except she didn’t do casual. Ever.

No, the best thing she could do was leave the team and go after Emerich on her own before someone else got hurt. That bullet could have hit any one of them in the boat today. They got lucky.

Emerich already killed her father and came close to killing Genie. If something had happened to Cameron today… She couldn’t lose anyone else. She turned to Genie who was watching her intently. “What?”

Concern filled Genie’s face. “Nothing. We’ll talk later.”

Great, Becca thought. Genie was onto her again.

“Hey, beautiful,” Chet said and leaned down to kiss Jayne.

Becca glanced at Cameron and nodded a greeting. She didn’t like the pinched look around his eyes. Something was up. Trying to read him, she focused on his blue eyes, emptying her mind, trying to get an impression, but all she got was static—anxiety. Secrets. His head was not in a good place.

What was he hiding?

Chapter6

Cameron hoped they’d be able to pick up Debi and get back to the estate as quickly as possible. He had to talk to the team. Their organization was on the brink of being shut down. His gaze instantly fell on Becca. Her long blond hair fell straight around her face. She was staring at him, her penetrating gaze catching and holding his.

Why was it that every time he saw her, his heart did a little blip? He wasn’t sure, but he assumed it had to be because she annoyed him so much and hoped it was true. No one was more infuriating than Becca Marsters. No one.

“Oh yeah, baby,” Marcie yelled from across the bar.

He smothered a grin as the dart she’d just thrown hit the bullseye. Not that he was surprised. The woman’s hand-eye coordination was the best he’d ever seen.

He pulled out the chair in between Becca and Jayne and sat at the table.

Jayne looked up at him. “Hey, Cameron.”

“How’s it going?” He reached for an onion ring.

She pushed her plate toward him. “Marcie’s working her magic.”

He grinned as Marcie threw another dart. “I can see that. Have you had a chance to talk with Debi yet?”

“Nope. Hoping to soon. We’re letting Marcie butter her up first,” Jayne said.

“By kicking her butt?”

She nodded and gave a whoop as Marcie hit the bullseye again. “Yep. We have to prove to her that we might be a little bit special.”

Laughter filled his chest. “Just a little bit.” He ordered a burger and beer from the waitress as they all watched Marcie make friends with the new girl.

“So what’s up?” Becca asked, unnerving him as she moved closer. Her all-seeing gaze was peering into his soul again. He never knew how much she could read him. He did everything he could to keep his shields up and to keep her out. The last thing he wanted was this explosive blonde inside his head, but now and then, she still managed to get past his defenses.

“I got a call on the way here,” he said. “A member of Congress has learned about our team.”

Becca’s eyes flashed. “How did that happen? I thought we were supposed to be top secret?”

“So did I. Trust me, our funders are not pleased.”

“Emerich leaked us,” she insisted. “He knows Congress will not take the chance of the CTA going active again. They are terrified that the public will discover what they allowed to happen using taxpayers' dollars. Experiments on children don’t look good for anyone.”

Cameron agreed. “We don’t have a lot of time before they pull the plug. We have people looking into who in Congress Emerich must be working with.”

“You need to let Cat help. She’s already in DC and she can get access to their social events through her mother-in-law, the dragon senator,” Becca said.
