Becca instantly stood and held out her hand. “I’m Becca Marsters.”

Debi just looked at her outstretched hand but didn’t move. Not to take it or to bolt.

“My father, Stuart Marsters, started a government organization a few decades ago called the CTA. He wanted to enhance people's natural abilities. He hired several scientists to work for him in the program,” Becca explained.

Jayne held up her hand. “Including my aunt and father.”

“We were all part of his experiments.” Becca’s hand swept around the table, encompassing all of them. “We have reason to believe you might have been too.”

Debi’s eyebrows rose and her eyes filled with surprise. “Okay, I’m out of here.” She turned to go.

Cameron rose immediately. “Please, hear us out. We came a long way to find you. You need our help, and I think, deep down, you know it. Give us five minutes and listen to what we have to say.”

She stared at him for a long moment.

“It’s important, please.”

She nodded, then took a chair. “Five minutes.”

Cameron exhaled a deep breath and hoped the girls would be able to work their magic. This could be their last chance at protecting one of the CTA’s victims and getting their help to stop Emerich.

They were almost out of time.

Chapter7

Becca sat as Debi and Cameron took their seats, thankful that Cameron was able to work his charms on her. The man oozed trust. He might not have been enhanced with special abilities, but he was a natural-born charmer.

“We all have gifts,” Genie explained, holding Kyle’s hand.

Becca envied her sister’s relationship with Kyle sometimes, but then she reminded herself that she’d never be able to let herself trust someone enough to let down her defenses and be that vulnerable to another person. Luckily, Kyle was a good guy and he literally went through fire for Genie to prove it. Becca grinned. A couple of times.

“I have superb hand-eye coordination. You never would have been able to beat me,” Marcie told her as she finished the rest of her daiquiri.

Debi frowned. “I came close.”

Marcie smirked a spark lighting her eyes. “Not close enough. You should see me with a gun.”

With a look of annoyance, Debi turned to Jayne. “And you?”

“Firestarter.” Jayne’s gaze was direct.

A relaxed smile crossed Debi’s face. “I might want to see that.”

Jayne shook her head. “Let’s hope you won’t have to.”

Debi turned to Becca.

Becca could feel her curiosity, but there was something else there too. Something she couldn’t read. “You don’t trust us, but you believe us because you have a gift you’ve never told anyone about. You see patterns. You’re a math genius.”

Debi’s lips twitched. “You could have read that anywhere.”

Becca held her gaze. “I see geometric shapes when I look at you. Also, there have been strange things happening lately. You think you’re being followed. That’s why you’re here. You didn’t want to be alone tonight.”

Debi’s lips thinned and something sparked in her eyes.Triumph?

Becca frowned. Something wasn’t right.

“Am I?” Debi challenged her.
