Page 2 of Becca's Trouble

She let out a relieved breath and smiled. “I won,” she called after it turned and continued running. No matter what Emerich threw at her, she would win. And as soon as she got the opportunity, she would go after him. See how he liked it.

After a minute, she looked over her shoulder to see if the wolf was following her. He was gone. She turned back and picked up her pace as her phone chirped in her ear.

She hit the button on the side of her earbuds. “Yes.”

“Are you almost done?” Marcie asked. “The team is here and we’re waiting for the birthday girl.”

“Oh, please.” Becca sighed, debating whether or not to tell her about the wolf. And the drone.

“Come on, let us have our fun,” Marcie said with a drawn-out whine.

Becca rolled her eyes. “Fine. I’m almost there.”

“Good. I can’t wait to see what Cameron got you. He’s just arrived.”

Becca’s insides tightened. “Please tell me there are not a bunch of presents stacked on the table.” The image filling her mind almost had her turning back into the woods. She loved Marcie. Marcie was the first real friend she’d ever had. She knew all her secrets, all her flaws, and still hung in there. But sometimes Becca wondered if having friends, having people in her life, and putting a target on their backs was worth it.

Sometimes being a lone wolf was nice.

“Are you trying to steal all my fun?” Marcie asked.

Becca growled. “Is this birthday for you or me?”

“Don’t worry,” Marcie said. “Everyone listened. There are no presents. Though, I for one would have liked to have seen what Cameron would have come up with.”

“He is my boss,” Becca reminded her.

“That doesn’t mean he doesn’t like you,” Marcie said in a singsong voice.

“He doesn’t. I annoy him.” She annoyed most people. It was part of her charm.

“Then why is it he can’t stop looking at you whenever you’re around?”

Becca scoffed. “It’s only because I drive him crazy. Hasn’t he said so numerous times?”

“Yes, but that’s only because he can’t stop thinking of you.”

Marcie was a hopeless romantic. “Apparently, you can’t stop thinking about it either.”

“True enough.” She disconnected the line.

Becca couldn’t help the smile spreading across her face as she picked up her pace. Not at the idea that Josh Cameron could be thinking about her in that way, since he was totally off-limits, but because Marcie was the only one who could make her laugh, and damn if that didn’t annoy the piss out of her.

After she and her sisters came into their abilities, lost their mother, and were separated and dispersed to the four corners of the earth, she learned to keep her distance from people. Dear Dad sent her to a boarding school in a far-off country all by herself. She had too many secrets to keep and couldn’t take the chance of letting anyone that close.

Except she did. With Emerich, who manipulated her, almost killed her sister Genie and did kill her father. Yeah, she had trust issues.

Marcie and the rest of the team were changing all that. Slowly.

Becca had never had a best friend before, especially someone who knew all her secrets. Her time working with the CTA was healing her; she could feel her defenses lowering, and she wasn’t altogether sure that was a good thing. She’d already let her sisters, Genie and Cat, back in. The truth was, they didn’t live ordinary lives; they had dangerous jobs. People out there wanted to kill them. All of them.

Emerich wanted to hurt everyone she cared about.

She couldn’t take the chance of getting close to anyone just to have them taken away again. She’d buried too many people she’d loved as it was. How could she get close to Cameron or even deepen her friendship with Marcie as long as Emerich was still on the loose? He had to be stopped and she had to be the one to stop him.

This was one op she wanted to do on her own. The last thing she wanted was to lead her team into Emerich’s clutches. The man was a demon.

She followed the dirt road around the front of the house. Beneath the mailbox, a white box with a red satin bow sat in the rocks nestled in the climbing purple clematis.
