Marcie? Why?

The door closed and she turned back to the railing. She could do this, she told herself. Fake it until you make it. How many times had she heard Marcie say that? Her heart hardened at the thought of her best friend’s betrayal.

Ex-best friend.

A door opened below her. Becca took a step back so she wouldn’t be seen and watched Marcie exit out the door, a rifle slung over her shoulder as she disappeared into the woods in the direction Cameron went.

Emerich sent Marcie after Cameron?

Becca sucked in a breath of horror. “Of course he did. Marcie is an expert shot. She could hit a bullseye from two hundred yards away. She is going to kill Cameron!”

Furious tears filled Becca’s eyes as she turned and entered the door to the stairwell. What was she going to do?

She had to find his pack with the SAT phone and call Kyle. He had to know what was happening and find Cameron before Marcie did.

Becca hurried back down the stairs, running toward the basement rooms. She found Cameron’s cell, now empty, and searched the rooms beyond it. At the far end of the hall, she found the guard’s locker room.

Was this where the guards kept their gear?

She heard someone coming and ducked into one of the shower stalls and pulled the curtain. Two men were opening their lockers, taking off their uniform jackets, putting on their civilian ones, and grabbing their backpacks. They were talking about where they were going to go for dinner before heading home.

If she could follow them, maybe she could figure out how to get out of the facility. As they left, she opened the locker one of the men had just hung his jacket in and pulled it on, along with one of his extra hats.

She twisted her hair up inside it and quickly followed after them. On her way out, she spotted Cameron’s pack lying on the floor next to the door. She grabbed it as she hurried down the hall after the men, keeping her head tucked low in case there were security cameras.

What was she talking about—of course, there were security cameras. She stopped herself from looking in the pack and slung it on her back, trying to appear natural as she followed the men out the back door and toward where the employees parked their vehicles.

She hoped the SAT phone was still inside and that she could get far enough away that the signal would not be blocked. One thing she knew for certain; she had to find and warn Cameron. There was no way she would let Marcie kill him. She loved him.

She’d never felt like this about anyone before, never let herself. But being at the house with her sisters, with all of them, she’d felt comfortable enough to let her guard down.

And to let love in.

She didn’t regret it, and she was ready to face it. To embrace it. Even if it broke her heart. The one good thing about the CTA being obliterated was Cameron was no longer her boss.

They could be together.

If they survived.

The two men got into a small pickup truck and started the engine. Quickly, Becca slipped into the bed and ducked low as they drove out of the compound, praying they didn’t see her climb inside. Luckily, their music was blasting.

As they passed through the gates and onto the small road heading into the forest, Becca heard alarms start sounding and prayed the two men would keep on going. That their music was loud enough that they didn’t hear the sirens peeling through the night.

Had Emerich discovered she was gone?

Or were the sirens for something else?

Something worse?

She unzipped the pack and shoved her hands inside, looking for the SAT phone, Cameron’s gun, his knife, anything that would help her. But other than his clothes, the pack was cleaned out.

Now what was she going to do?

Chapter22

Cameron ran as long as he could, but without water and food, he was fading fast. His goal was to get as far from the compound as he could before Emerich sent his men after him.

He retraced their steps from earlier, trying to decide if he should take the chance and return to the cave for the night or just keep going. Did Emerich’s men know about the cave? Had he known they’d been there all along? The two men they’d followed that morning were walking right in front of the cave.
