“What the hell’s going on in here?” a man shouts.

Will he save me?

In the distance, a door stands open, filling the room with more light than I’ve seen in days. If the man who walks in is surprised to find us in this position, he doesn’t show it.

The man on top of me releases my leg, turning back to the intruder and barking something at him in the language they all seem to speak. They shout back and forth at each other for several seconds and then the man stands, running a hand through his hair. He waves a hand at me dismissively, as if I’m not worth his time.

“Stay in your filth then, pig.” He spits at me, a glob of sticky saliva dropping to the floor in front of me. I scoot back farther. “Won’t matter now anyway,” he mumbles as he nears the door. “The boss is coming for you.”

Chills line my skin. “W-what?”

He turns back, getting the exact reaction from me he was hoping for. With a smirk, he says, “There’s been a change in plans. Your purchase was canceled.”

“What does that mean? I’m going home?”

“No,” he says firmly, staring at me with disgust. “You’re not going home. Not your old home, anyway. You’re going home with the boss. He… He bought you.”

“Wha—” The door opens again, cutting me off. Before I can finish my question, a new group appears. This time, it’s three men. I don’t recognize a single one of them.

“Sleep tight,” one whispers, slipping the bag over my head.

I don’t fight it this time. Within seconds, the strong chemical scent fills my nose and I lose consciousness. I welcome the darkness.

CHAPTERTWENTY-FIVE

BLAKE

“We have to find him,” I say, staring up at Florence over the phone when we end the call with Patton. “We have to find him now.” I stand, adrenaline pulsing through my veins. I can’t believe she had him and let him go. She spoke to him, and now he knows who she is. He already knew who I was. Our chances of finding him and him not running away are practically zero.

“I have his number,” she says, and I spin on my heels.

“What?”

“He gave me his number. I’ll call him.”

I don’t hold out much hope it’s the correct number, or if it is that he’ll pick up, but I hold my breath as she locates his name in her contacts.

“Hello?”

I huff out a breath as I hear a voice fill the line.

“Zach?” Florence asks.

“Yeah, who is this?” Wherever he is, it’s loud. I’m guessing he’s off the ship already.

“It’s Florence. Mae’s friend.”

“Oh.” He sounds disappointed. “Hey, Florence. Everything good?”

“Actually, we just got some news and I was hoping to update you in person. Can we meet you?”

“Um…” The background noise softens slightly. I assume he’s moving away from it. “Yeah, sure. Sure. Where are you at? I can come to you.”

“We’re still on the ship. Are you off?”

“Oh, yeah. I am. Want to meet me on the little concrete walkway coming into the port?”
