I give her more, losing myself in it.

When I finally let her go, she grips my shirt and keeps me close, not ready to let me go yet. Her eyes are sparkling, her breaths are coming fast, her body is alive. “One of these days, you’ll realize I’ll never stop arguing with you.”

I keep her in my arms for a minute, taking her beauty in, taking her essence in.

No woman has ever held my attention like Adeline does.

I was aware of that during our engagement period, but I assumed it was because I was focused on getting us to the wedding day and then getting us through the year of marriage. I assumed she was in my thoughts so much because of my ultimate goal.

She fought her way through those three months like she was put on this earth to fight with me. And I don’t doubt she’ll fight with me until the very last day of our marriage.

I also don’t doubt that she’ll keep my attention all that time too.

I tighten my hold on her. “Don’t ever change. Not for me. Not for the world. Not for anyone.”

I let her go and collect our gifts and the food Mom insisted we bring home.

Adeline attempts to help me.

I refuse her help.

She argues with me over it.

I tell her to get her ass upstairs.

She’s still arguing with me over the fact she’d rather do things for herself when we step out of the elevator in my penthouse.

Jeff meets us as she launches into a new argument. “Sir, you have a guest.”

We weren’t expecting anyone, so I’m wondering who when Adeline’s sister joins us. She looks to Adeline first before bringing her eyes to mine. “Surprise!”

The first time I met Sabrina, I was struck by how different she and Adeline are. Not just in looks, but in personality.

Where Adeline is classy, sincere, and confident to her core, Sabrina isn’t any of those things.

She’s loud and rude. Disrespectful to her sister. She lacks belief in herself and compensates by treating others badly. She’s critical and judgmental, especially of Adeline. And if my gut isn’t wrong, she’s deceitful.

Sabrina is always looking for how she can get more out of others.

She’s a taker, and I have no time for parasites like her.

“Sabrina,” Adeline says, clearly surprised to see her sister. She hugs her and moves through the motions of welcoming her, but I see the stiffness in her body, the wariness. “I thought you were coming tomorrow.”

Sabrina shrugs. “I wanted to come today. Is it a big deal?”

Adeline quickly shakes her head. “No. I’m so glad to see you.”

Fuck, I’ve never heard Adeline like this.

Filled with nervous energy.

She’s walking on eggshells with her own fucking family.

Sabrina shoots a smile my way. “So, what’s the plan for tonight? Some drinks? Some fun?”

“Your sister’s tired. She’s going to bed,” I say in no uncertain terms.

Adeline touches my arm, giving me a small frown. “Jameson,” she murmurs. Then, looking back at Sabrina, she says, “I’ll get some wine. We’ll catch up.”
