“And as such, it’s my job to protect her. From where I’m standing, you two are the ones she needs the most protection from.”
Pure anger is coursing through her. I know that because every pore in her body is screaming that at me now. “You just fucked up your chance of enjoying some fun on the side that no one would have ever needed to know about.”
“I don’t need fun like that in my life, Sabrina.”
“Every man needs fun like that in their life.” A scheming look passes through her eyes. “And you know what? Just because we didn’t get to have some, doesn’t mean we didn’t do anything.”
I follow her line of thinking perfectly, and the dislike and distrust I had for her before this conversation only grows. “I advise you not to travel down that path. It won’t end well for you.”
“It’s a win-win for you, Jameson. You pay me to keep my mouth shut about something we both know you would have said yes to, and Adeline will never hear me asking for money again. And look at that, you get to protect your precious wife.”
Fury hunts its way through my body, looking for an out. “Get the fuck out of my home and don’t ever come back here again.”
She takes her sweet time following that directive, and while she’s standing there glaring at me, Adeline’s voice sounds from the kitchen doorway. “What’s happening here?”
I lift my face to look at her while Sabrina clutches my shirt, presses her body to mine, turns to face her sister, and says with fake breathlessness, “Oh my goodness, Adeline, this isn’t what it looks like. I swear.”
The biggest difference between these two women? Adeline is an intelligent woman while Sabrina is not.
Disappointment flares in her eyes. “Sabrina,” she says softly, not one ounce of fight left in her for the relationship I know she wants with her sister. “Don’t.”
Sabrina clings to false hope while pushing me away. “I told him no, Addy. I would never do that to you.Never.”
Adeline comes to us, her eyes firmly on Sabrina. “Jameson didn’t try to fuck you. We both know that, so just stop. This isn’t going to be another one of your schemes to get money.”
Anger consumes Sabrina’s entire body. “Fuck you both with your bullshit about me scheming to get money! I have bills to pay. For me and Mom. And I don’t have boobs or an ass like you to help me do that.”
Adeline slaps her.
Wild and furious.
I didn’t see it coming and fuck if I don’t support it.
“I will not be made to feel bad for the body I have anymore. But you know what I have that I use more than my boobs or my ass? A brain.” Her eyes burn with the kind of anger and hurt that she’ll feel long after tonight. “You have one of those too. You’re just too lazy to use it.”
“God, you are so fucking high and mighty,” Sabrina seethes, holding her cheek. Then, stepping close to Adeline, she spits out, “Mom says you’re just like your father. He must have been a real fucking asshole.”
Adeline blinks, her chest stilling like she’s no longer bringing air in. “What did you just say?”
Sabrina gloats, pushing her shoulders back. “You think you know everything. You think you know better than everyone else. You don’t. You didn’t even know we don’t have the same father. You’re too busy trying to get people to look at you and follow you that you don’t pay attention.”
“Who is my father?”
“I don’t know. And I don’t fucking care. As far as I’m concerned, we’re not even real sisters. You’re a bitch and I hate everything about you.” Sabrina looks at me after spewing that bullshit. “You deserve her. Fuck you both.”
With that, she storms out of the kitchen and a minute later, I hear the elevator open to remove her from my home.
Adeline looks like she’s been hit by a weapon. Stricken in the worst possible way: by a loved one.
I pull her to me and wrap her in my arms.
She sags against me, holding on with a desperate need.
We don’t speak. There are no words for what just happened.
She holds me and I hold her, for a long time.
Finally, she lifts her head and looks up at me. Tears stain her cheeks. “How can someone be so hateful?”
