I don’t want to get into this discussion because it won’t lead to anything but sex with all the sexual energy between us this morning, so I push off the vanity and say, “We’re leaving in ten minutes.”

“I’m sensing a lot of bossiness in you right now and I’d just like to point out that I am not the reason we’re running late. I do believe you’re the one who demanded I let you put your dick in my mouth this morning.”

Fuck.

Even just the word “dick” anywhere near Charlize’s mouth gets me hard.

“You are the reason for everything, Charlize.” I brush my lips across hers before saying with some determination, “Ten minutes.” With that, I stride out of the bathroom so I can put some space between her and my need for her.

A call comes in from Julian as I exit the bedroom and I head into my office to take it. We discuss stocks for almost ten minutes, making a plan to talk more about this later. After I end the call, I go in search of Charlize.

I don’t find her in the bedroom or bathroom, but I do find her in the living room.

She’s on her hands and knees under the dining table. My mother is also in the living room, watching Charlize. The way Charlize is muttering to herself tells me she has no idea she’s not alone.

As I round the corner into the room, Charlize mutters, “I’m not letting him put his dick in my mouth anymore. Or anywhere for that matter. These were my favorite earrings and now they’re lost, and it’s all his dick’s fault.”

My lips twitch and I come to a stop, interested to see what happens next.

“Well,” my mother says, moving closer to Charlize, “I, for one, am glad he’s putting his dick somewhere. I was beginning to think he’d never put it anywhere ever again.”

Charlize’s head snaps up and she quickly crawls backward, out from under the table. “Oh my God,” she exclaims, the words rushing out of her mouth as she clambers to her feet, mortification written all over her. “You must be Owen’s mom. I can’t believe you just heard me say all that. I promise you I am not usually that crude. I would never have said that if I knew you were standing there.” Her eyes shift to me when she realizes I’m watching. They plead with me to save her before she looks back at Mom. “Please forgive me.” Her pleading eyes come back to me, widening as if to say, “If you ever want your dick in my mouth again, you will get your ass over herenow.”

“My dear girl,” Mom says, “I’ve only ever seen one other woman in Owen’s private space before, so this tells me you mean something to him. I’m more interested in that than anything crude you might say.”

I walk toward them. “Mom. I wasn’t aware I’d be seeing you today.” It’s unusual for my mother to drop by unannounced.

She turns and looks at me. “When a son of mine stops taking my calls, I take it very seriously, Owen.”

Fuck, I meant to return her calls this week but got distracted by work.

“I haven’t stopped taking your calls. I was in London this week.”

“That may be the case, but I’d appreciate it if you returned at least one of them.” She glances at Charlize. “And perhaps you could introduce me to your friend.”

Charlize’s expression tells me she wishes the floor would open up and swallow her whole. But she’s pasted a smile on her face for my mother. I appreciate that smile because I suspect there’s a whole lot of anxiety swirling deeply inside her right now.

I introduce them, moving next to Charlize and sliding my arm around her waist.

“It’s lovely to meet you, Mary,” Charlize says.

“Likewise,” Mom says before looking at me. “Your brother will be in town tomorrow night. I’d like you to come to dinner with us.” She shifts her attention to Charlize. “You’re welcome to join us, Charlize.”

Charlize smooths her dress as she stares at Mom. “Thank you,” she says. “But I have a family dinner of my own to go to, and while I’d love to come to yours, I’ve already told my mother I’ll be at ours.”

Mom looks at her like she’s assessing her. She then nods and says, “Next time.”

“I’ll be there,” I say. My brother doesn’t get to New York often, and when he does, I always make it a point to spend time with him.

“Good,” Mom says. “Also, is everything going well with Jill as far as the Bluestone Award is concerned?”

“Yes.”

“Good to hear. Surely you can keep her in line for five more weeks.”

My mother is nothing if not focused when there’s a goal to be met.

She eyes Charlize. “It was good to meet you, Charlize. We must plan a dinner soon so we can begin getting to know each other.”
