“I would argue I was trying to be efficient.”

“I would counter that arguing with me repeatedly means you’re being defiant. And while I have my preferred ways of handling defiance, none of them are suitable for the workplace.”

If I thought I was hot before, I knew nothing.

I cross my legs. It turns out to be an incorrect move because it draws Owen’s attention, and let’s just say his eyes on my legs are the last thing I need right now.

It’s all too much and it causes me to throw out, “Do you always walk around your workplace with those buttons undone?”

He doesn’t answer my question, but his heated gaze tells me he likes that I asked it. Instead, he says, “So, I can check one thing off my list of things I still have to learn about you. You’re an executive assistant.”

“I am. And you’re a hedge fund guy.”

“I am.”

I narrow my eyes at him. “Are you not that good at it? I mean, why didn’t Seth ask for your advice with Poppy’s shares?”

“I follow your line of thinking there. Very analytical, but you made an assumption that was wrong.”

“Which was what?”

“You assumed that Seth made his choice based on the best man for the job when that wasn’t a factor in his decision.”

I frown. “Why not? That makes no sense.”

“I agree. Seth chose based on family connections.”

“See, this is why I detest family connections. They fuck you up at the best of times.”

“Not always, but on this, yes. However, the good news is that Seth has now asked me to help.”

“I already advised Poppy which shares I think she should sell and which she should buy. I hope you’re not going to mess with that.”

It does not escape me that Owen is the CEO of a company that manages billions for their clients.Billions. He clearly is not bad at his job. But still, Poppy is my girl, and I am nothing if not protective of my people.

“That was your advice?”

“The Bliss and Fira Industry shares? Yes.”

He’s impressed by this. I see that in his eyes. “I spoke with her an hour ago and told her to double down on those Fira shares. That was a smart move.”

His praise works its way through me. I’m not trained to do the work he does, but my grandfather taught me all about shares and money when I was a kid. It’s because of him that I love investing and am good at predicting the market. However, I’m not good with money once I make it. I tend to give money to friends when they need it and lend it to boyfriends who end up screwing me over and not paying me back. My parents only seem to see the mess my finances are in and ignore the fact I know about investing. I feel like they dismiss me during any family conversation about money. Owen’s recognition means a lot.

“Thank you,” I say softly.

His phone rings. When he doesn’t make a move to answer it or even check who it is, I say, “I can come back if you need to take that call.”

“No, you’re not leaving yet.”

The way his voice drops deeper as he says that, coupled with all the masculine energy radiating from him, sends a rush of desire through me and causes my brain to stop sending words to my mouth.

We both turn silent, watching each other until Owen says, “You missed out on a delicious breakfast yesterday.”

The worddeliciousshould be banned from Owen’s mouth.

Actually, all words should be banned from his mouth.

He could be telling me all about the features on a new vacuum cleaner, and I would even want those words banned.
