“I was going to offer to make you coffee.”

She rests her hip against the countertop. “I know you said you’re a great cook, but has that been verified by anyone? And if so, do those skills extend to coffee making, because I have to tell you, I’m fussy when it comes to my coffee.”

“My mother and brother can verify my coffee-making skills for you, but I’d prefer to show you myself. I make the best coffee.”

“Ahh no, Owen,Imake the best coffee.”

“I see we’re going to have to fight this out. Just so you know, I’ve never had coffee better than mine.”

“Well, I’ll never say no to a man offering to make me coffee. Even if he is a little cocky about his skills.”

“It’s not cocky when the thing he’s confident about is proven.”

“Trust me, cocky is cocky regardless. I hope you can live up to this promise of yours because I won’t let you forget it if you can’t.”

“I’ll make the coffee today. You’ll make it next time. Then we’ll compare.” I close the distance between us and bring my mouth to her ear. “Prepare to lose this fight, beautiful.”

I’m instantly aware of the mistake I’ve made.

I’m too close to her now, too consumed by her scent, too affected by her.

“Way too cocky,” she says, her breathy reply showing me she’s just as affected.

I take a step back, but I don’t get to work on the coffee just yet. I’m too busy taking in everything about her. She’s just as busy doing the same. Almost as if we’re looking at each other for the first time today.

Charlize is wearing a red skirt, a black top, and leopard print sneakers. My brain is stuck on the fact I told her that red is my favorite color on a woman and I’m wondering whether she chose the red for me. It’s an arrogant thought but one I can’t shift. I fucking want that to have been her reason.

I’m stuck in a loop of that thought when Tahlia comes into the break room. “Owen, Julian is looking for you. He said something about finishing a discussion with you from this morning.”

I look at her. “Let him know I’ll be in my office in about five minutes.”

“Will do.”

After she leaves us, I get to work on the coffee. Charlize watches me silently, but I’m more than aware her eyes are all over me. If I wasn’t trying my damnedest to keep my hands off her, I’d have them all over her in the same way. This day can’t go by fast enough.

“Here,” she says, passing me the milk from the fridge.

Our hands brush as I take it from her, sparking desire through me.

I shift my attention back to the coffee and finish making our drinks before looking at her again. “You ready to be blown away?”

She rolls her eyes as she takes the mug I offer her. “Calm down. The only one of us who is going to be blown away is you when you drink my coffee next time.”

I arch my brows. “Who’s cocky now?”

She takes a sip, and I see the surprise in her eyes, but she doesn’t give me anything else to go on. After the fourth sip, she caves. “Okay, so you weren’t kidding when you said you make good coffee.”

“And?”

“I may just call it now. I’m not sure even my coffee can stand up to this.”

“And here I was thinking you weren’t a quitter. You were very adamant about that the other night. Where’s that fighting spirit?”

“Right, so, cockyandcompetitive. I see.”

“What do you see?”

“That we’re going to fight this out after all.”
