She does not want to give me the acknowledgement I’m looking for. When she doesn’t answer me, I step forward and roar, “Are we fucking clear?”

She jumps, which pisses her off, and I receive a filthy glare as she snaps, “Yes, we’re fucking clear.”

“Good. And one last thing, you should expect a visit from the DOJ about that fraud mentioned in the file.” At her wide eyes, I say, “You didn’t think I’d ignore what you’ve already done to Kristen, did you? This is for that.”

I stalk out of her condo and am on my way to my car when Kristen calls.

My phone is to my ear in seconds. “Where are you?”

“I’m in my favorite coffee shop eating my second donut for the day. I wish you were here.”

“Tell me where and I’ll be there.”

“No, Bradford, I know you’re busy today. I shouldn’t have said that.”

“You should always tell me when you wish I was with you.”

“You sound a bit wild. Is everything going okay?”

“I fired Alan. He won’t ever harass you again. I also just saw Cecelia. Her campaign against you is over. Although, it seems I was late to that party.”

“I can’t tell right now if I’m in trouble or not.”

“You’re never in trouble, Kristen.”

“This is a good piece of information to have. And now that I have it, I’m going to tell you that I hired Olivia today to help me take charge of the narrative.”

Fuck, I love my wife. “She’ll get the job done.”

“Also, as part of that, I’m considering doing an interview with Marlee James.”

When it comes to respected journalists, Marlee is one of the most recognized in America. “You’redoing it orwe’redoing it?”

“Olivia suggested an honest and vulnerable interview with just me, and I think she might be right. But I won’t do it if you don’t want me to.”

“I trust you and Olivia to do what you think is best.”

“I have something else to tell you, Bradford.”

“What?”

“Actually, two things. First, we’re not going to my class reunion. I’m done with them. And second, we’re bringing strawberry jam into our home, which means you should prepare yourself for my sugar comas and the fallout of those comas.”

“What does a fallout entail?”

“It can be anything from excessive retail therapy to deal with the emotions of all the sugar I unwillingly consumed, to a hardcore exercise plan that I’ll likely force upon you too, to long movie rewatching marathons while I wail about all the sugar I ate, to me removing any kind of fun food from the place, to me blaming you for my consumption of all that sugar.”

“All this from strawberry jam?”

“Well, strawberry jam is the gateway drug. You do know about gateway sugar, right?”

I chuckle. “I did not, but consider me enlightened. Also, consider me prepared. I can deal with the fallout.”

She’s silent for a beat and when she speaks again, I feel her smile. “I know you can. I think you can deal with all my small things.”

“Where are you, Kristen?”

“You really have time to come and eat a donut with me?”
