Anger and anguish flared at the same time within my heart, fighting for supremacy, combining and growing in size.

My mate was rejecting me.

She was leaving me.

My dragon and my sorcerer fought inside my human form and the fire they both created burned in my veins, desperate for release.

Chapter 12

CHARITY

I could see sudden flames flare bright within Anthony’s eyes. Fear struck at my core like a knife to my diaphragm. I’d pushed him too far. He was losing control. No-one could keep such power inside themselves, deny it, hate it, and expect it to disappear without a trace.

Even I knew that.

I wasn’t familiar with anything in this world, but it was clear as the purple eyes in the prince’s face that he was losing his battle against his magic. His dragon was beautiful, and obviously powerful. But his mother’s magic thrived inside of him too.

And it had been deprived and denied for far too long.

My chest rose and fell as panic set in and my breathing sped up. My heart was hammering against my ribs and adrenaline zinged along my veins. I needed to get away from Anthony. And fast. Before he did something to destroy us both.

The bedroom door was still open, so I inhaled a breath for good luck, and made a run for it.

Flames shot from Anthony’s fingers as I ran past him, catching the carpet alight.

I screamed as I jumped over the fire and bolted through the door. I raced down the stairs, toward the front foyer. I had to find help. I couldn’t leave Anthony to burn down the castle. Or worse, to burn himself up.

There was a man standing with the butler, by the front entrance. He looked different to the servants. Taller. With clothes that spoke of wealth.

I grabbed his arm, gasping for air. “It’s Anthony. He needs help. Please.”

The man’s blue eyes trained on my face. I immediately knew who he was. “You’re Carlak.”

He nodded. “And you’re Charity.”

“Please. You’ve gotta help him.”
