He was dead.

Kansas told me he was. Opening my eyes, I blinked as I saw my brother rush into the barn like some avenging angel, gun in hand as he started shooting.

He was here.

He came for me.

Watching in awe as my brother openly fired, gunfire filled the barn as a sharp pain robbed me of air as I felt the knife John held to my neck slice through the side of my neck and down my exposed back. My knees buckled and before I could stop myself, I lay on the floor of the barn, watching as my brother came to save me.

Blinking several times, I said nothing as he crawled over to me. “Stay awake,Jinx. Come on, sweetheart, stay awake.”

Moaning, I opened my eyes and saw my brother lying next to me. He looked so handsome. Just like I remembered.

“You came for me,” I croaked from my throat, too afraid to speak. “I missed you. Is he dead?”

His face fell. “He got away, Kali. I’m sorry. I got him in his leg, but he ran out the side of the barn. The cop with him.”

“It’s okay,” I sighed, moving closer to him, reaching for his hand. My brother was here. “You’re here. That’s all that matters.”

Resting my head on his shoulder, I tried to breathe through the pain. Everything hurt.

“Kole?” I muttered, curling myself around him. “Is Kansas coming?”

“Kali, I can guarantee that the entire club will come.”

“That’s good,” I barely said, my body slowly shutting down.

“Kali,” my brother whispered. “I need to tell you something. It was me. I killed your brother. I didn’t mean to. I wasn’t in my right mind when it happened. I thought he was hurting a woman. By the time I realized it, I had already killed him. He wanted me to give you a message. He told me…tell Jinx I love her.”

He was making no sense.

How could he kill himself?

My Kole was strong. He was here, alive, lying next to me.

He saved me.

Hugging him closer, I whispered, “I love you too. Kole, I’m tired. Can we talk later? Like when I’m not bleeding all over the place?”

My brother kissed my forehead, then moaned, “Sure Jinx.”

I woke to the sound of a heart beating loudly. Moaning, I turned my head and opened my eyes to find Kansas asleep in the chair next to my bed. He looked exhausted.

“He hasn’t left your side.”

Looking the other way, I saw Montana sitting on the other side of me. He looked exhausted, as if he hadn’t slept in days. They both did. The one person I didn’t see was Kole.

“Where’s Kole?”

Montana frowned. “What?”

“My brother. He saved me. He came. He was there. He stopped John from raping me again.”

“Fuck,” Montana cursed, rubbing his hands down his face. “Kali, Kole’s dead. He wasn’t there. Someone else saved you.”

He was wrong.

I saw my brother.
