“No. I want to see Shadow.”

“You can see him when the doctor says it’s safe.”

Kali faced me. Determination and resolve paramount in her eyes. “I’m walking across the hall to check on the man who saved my life. Now, either you can help me or get the hell out of my way.”

“Son, this isn’t a battle you’re gonna win,” my father chuckled, as he sat in the corner of her room, reading the local paper. From the moment the hospital admitted Kali and gave her a private room, I insisted that at least two brothers stay with her round the clock. That didn’t include the two brothers I had manning her door.

“Shut up, dad.”

“Just sayin’.”

The door opened and in walked my mother and Vivi, talking a mile a minute.

“I’m serious, Virginia. You would love it here. The area is beautiful.”

“I’ll think about it, but I can’t see leaving the city. Our lives are there.”

“Then what about a summer home?”

“That would work.”

“Woman, what are you blathering about?” my dad asked, looking at mom.

“Never you mind, George.”

My dad huffed before going back to his paper.

“You ready, Kali?” Vivi asked, walking over to my woman, holding a robe, while my mother pushed a wheelchair.

“She isn’t going,” I stated firmly, standing my ground.

All three women slowly turned to look at me as I heard my father chuckle. “Now ya did it, boy. I’d run if I were you.”

“Shut up, dad,” I groaned.

Fuck it. She was going to do what she wanted, anyway.

I’d seen the same look she was currently giving me my whole life. My mother perfected it. It was scary enough coming from my mom, but to have Kali and Vivi looking at me with the same expression was enough to make my balls shrivel up and head north.

“Fine, but I’m taking you.”

Kali smiled sweetly, putting the robe on, then sitting in the wheelchair. Taking the handles from my mom, I wheeled Kali across the hall.

Entering Shadow’s room, I saw his three sisters sitting around his bed. Upon seeing me, the oldest, Faith slowly got to her feet. “I won’t let you hurt him. He was only trying to help Kali.”

That stopped me short.

She thought I was here to hurt him.

“What is she talking about, Kansas?” Kali asked, looking up at me.

“He wants to kill our brother,” another sister said, moving protectively closer to the man laying in the bed who just stared at my woman.

“I’m not going to hurt your brother.”

“Promise?” Hope, the last sister, asked.

“Kansas would never,” Kali said, slowly rolling the wheelchair closer to the bed before I could stop her. “Your brother saved my life. That’s a debt I’ll never be able to repay. I give you my word.”
