“Malice, Shame. Been a long time.”

“Yeah, not long enough,” Shame growled, placing his helmet on his lap. Fucker was looking for a fight. Too bad I wasn’t biting.

“So, what’s the package?”

Malice lowered his kickstand, got off his bike, and walked over to the idling SUV. Opening the back door, I watched as Malice reached in, then placed a little girl on her feet.

What the hell?

Walking closer, Malice reached in again, then placed two young boys next to the little girl. Going back in for more, I was about to ask what the hell he was doing when he placed an infant carrier next to the three kids.

“What the hell?” I growled, reaching for the door when I stopped dead in my tracks. There, leaning out of the black SUV, was none other than my mother, Virginia Stone, in the flesh. “Hello, Kansas.”

My mother hadn’t changed one fucking bit. Still beautiful as ever, dressed in a perfectly tailored Balenciaga dark Navy suit with a cream silk shirt, hair coiffed and styled to perfection. My mother was a force to be reckoned with on a good day. Right now, she looked as if she was ready to rip my head from my shoulders. It had been close to ten years since I’d seen her and, though she looked a smidge older than I remember, she was still stunning.

Gulping, I held out my hand for her to take. “Mom.”

“Nice to know you remember who I am.”

Sighing, I rolled my eyes at her comment before helping her out of the SUV as the little girl rushed over, wrapping her arms around my mom’s leg.

“What are you doing here, Mom?”

“Making sure you fall in line.”

Shame snickered as he and Malice walked over to the ambulance and opened the back doors. Standing next to my mother, I watched as Dr. August Lansing stepped out of the back, complaining, “Jesus Christ. Doesn’t this fucking state have money for road construction? I swear if this backwoods town doesn’t have proper medical care, I’m taking her back to New York City.”

“Calm down, August,” my mother soothed, walking over to the familiar man.

The last time I saw August Lansing, he just started his attending position in general surgery at Bellevue Hospital in New York City. The man was older and more seasoned than I remembered. The graying hair at his temples showed his age. Closer to Montana’s age, August always seemed a cut above everyone else in the club, but I knew differently. I knew his skeletons, who the man really was.

“I’ve already investigated the local hospital. Though the town is lacking, the Comanche Medical Hospital has everything she’ll need,” my mom advised.

“They better,” the club doctor huffed, helping Malice lower a gurney onto the ground, with Shame holding an IV bag and other medical equipment. “I didn’t spend months keeping her alive just for her to get an infection and die in this desolate place.”

“Would someone tell me what the hell is going on?” I shouted, getting everyone’s attention.

Malice smirked. Shame shook his head. August narrowed his eyes. But it was my mother who rounded on me, pointing her dainty finger at my chest. “Watch the tone, Kansas Aaron Stone. You will be respectful and take care of Kali and her kids until it’s safe for her to return home. August and I’ve have thought of everything. All you need to do is to make sure Kali isn’t found.”

“Who the hell is Kali?”

My mother grabbed my hand and pulled me towards the gurney. There on the gurney lay a real honest to God fucking angel with eyes as blue as the Oklahoma horizon and hair the color of corn-silk. I’d seen my fair share of beautiful women before and thought no one would ever compare to my beautiful Katie, but there she was, staring back at me with those soft blue eyes.

“Kansas, meet Kali. Your package. Kali, this is Kansas, my youngest son. He will take care of you until Montana comes for you. You will be safe here,” my mother introduced as if she were at some tea party in the city.

Wait. What?

I couldn’t have heard my mother correctly.

Montana was coming here.

“What do you mean until Montana comes for her?” I asked, shaking my head.

What the hell was going on?

“Mom? What do you mean by that? Who is this chick?”

Malice sneered. “Never you mind. All you need to know is that you agreed to the marker.”
