“Babe,” Kansas whispered. “You’re not alone. You have the kids, my brothers, even me. We are not going anywhere.”

“Kansas is right, Kali. You will never be alone again. I can promise you that. You have the Diamondbacks and the Soulless Sinners. We are going to be your family now.” George added sincerely.

Did he suffer?

“No, darling. Preliminary reports state it was quick. He died on impact. Kali, you know I knew your grandfather. What you don’t know is that I helped your grandfather create your trust, along with Mr. Crisp. Your grandfather loved you very much, Kaliope. He never trusted John and asked Mr. Crisp and I to put in a clause that ensured that no one would ever take your future away from you. That’s why your grandfather insisted that John sign a prenup. However, there was another stipulation your grandfather insisted upon. A safeguard. A guarantee that it would take care of you, no matter what.”

Okay?

“If you become incapacitated and there are children, Kole will take control of the trust until you can manage it again.”

But I don’t know where Kole is.

Mrs. Stone looked at her son.

Kansas sighed. “Kali, you were kind of out of it when you arrived here, but Mr. Crisp showed up later that day after Vivi got you settled. He, my mother and I had a long talk. With your brother missing, Mr. Crisp and my mom insisted I activate a failsafe in your trust. It was the only way to guarantee you and the children’s safety under any circumstance.”

What failsafe?

“They asked me to do something. I only agreed because you and the kids needed to be protected. Mr. Crisp knew with my family connections and the backing of the Soulless Sinners that no one would dare fuck with you.”

I don’t understand. What did you agree to?

Kansas looked at his parents as his mother placed a legal document before me. Picking it up, I read it in its entirety. When I realized what I was reading, my eyes snapped to Kansas. I could see the worry mixed with apprehension in his eyes.

He really didn’t want to do this.

Shaking my head, I couldn’t let him do this. He didn’t like me. Not like that. He only tolerated me because of his obligation to his brother. I knew that. The man avoided me most of the time.

“You were never supposed to know. This wasn’t the plan. You were supposed to heal and get back on your feet. Then Mr. Crisp would destroy that document.”

“Kali,” Detective Conroy spoke. “Let me assure you that the Lawton Police and Federal officials are doing what we can to find John Stevens and bring him to justice. Though it probably doesn’t feel like it, you and the kids are safe here. The chief has already agreed to hourly drive buys until Stevens is in custody.”

I barely heard the man as my eyes stared blankly at the document.

“Kali,” Mrs. Stone said soothingly as she moved closer. “I know this is a lot to take in. That document is only to ensure you and the kids stay safe. The second you are safe, I can have it taken care of if that is your wish. Until that day arrives, this is the only way, darling girl. All you need to do is sign it.”

Kansas looked blankly at me.

I couldn’t read him.

I want to speak with Kansas alone.

No one said a word as they left me and Kansas alone. Kansas said nothing as he sat there on the bed next to me. Tilting my head to the side, I looked into his eyes to find something, anything, that told me he was okay with this. After everything that happened, I honestly believed that nothing could ever shock me.

I was wrong.

My whole life, my grandfather did everything he could to protect me. Ensuring I was safe. Growing up, I knew what I would inherit. I never really thought about the ramifications that would come with it when that day happened. I was only twenty-five years old and a mother of four. I had an ex-husband hell bent on trying to kill me and take my money. I was still recovering from his last attempt. With me here, the Diamondbacks were in danger. I knew John wouldn’t stop until he had what he wanted. The man was sadistic that way. I couldn’t in good conscience stay here and endanger everyone else.

You don’t want this.

“Not about what I want, babe.”

I won’t force you to do this.

“You’re not forcing me to do anything, Kali. I wouldn’t have put my signature on that document if I didn’t know what I was getting.”

Explain?
