“Andwhose fault is that?!”

Geez, she was on a fucking tear today.

Sighing, I rubbed the back of my neck. “What do you want me to do, Kali? It’s not like there’s a place in town where they can all sleep at night and get the help they need.”

“Yes,there is,” she smiled sweetly, and I just fucking knew I wasn’t going to like what she was about to say yes. Looking toward the Diamondback Apartments across the street, she placed her hands on her hips and grinned.

Shaking my head, I pushed off the car. “No. That building is for the club brothers.”

“But no one lives there. They all stay at the club!”

“It doesn’t matter. You know why we built that place.”

“I do, Kansas, and it was a really nice idea, but no one stays there. Not even Vivi and Pence. Yes, they have occasionally, but if they’re not at the clubhouse, they go home. To their house.”

“No. Trigger and Blackjack live in one of the apartments.”

Kali rolled her eyes and groaned. “You’re kidding right? Trigger either sleeps at the clubhouse or on our couch and you know it. As for Blackjack, when was the last time he actually slept there?”

“Doesn’t matter. That building belongs to the club. End of discussion.” I stated firmly, returning my attention to the engine before me. Absolutely loved how passionate Kali was about this, but there was no fucking way I was handing over the club’s apartment building so she could put homeless kids in it. It was not Kali’s responsibility to provide a roof over these kids’ heads. That’s what social services were for. Let the city solve their own homeless problem.

“End of discussion?” Kali growled, and I flinched.

Shit. I shouldn’t have said that. Trying my damnedest not to look, my curiosity got the better of me. When I turned to look at my woman, I wished I hadn’t looked.

She was fucking pissed.

Saying nothing more, she did a perfect about face and stormed away.

Fuck, I was in deep shit now.

Trying to concentrate on the engine I was working on before she showed up, I had just removed a spark plug when Blackjack walked over. “What’s wrong with Kali?”

“She’s mad at me.”

“What’d ya do this time?”

“Told her she couldn’t have the Diamondback Apartment building for some homeless kids. She wouldn’t let it go, and I told her the discussion was over. My answer was no.”

“Why?” Blackjack questioned. “The building is sucking money left and right, Prez. None of us live there. It sits vacant. If you let her have the building, I can apply to have it rezoned as a business, which would save us a shit load in taxes. Plus, it’s a tax right off if she uses the building as a charitable residence. Do you know how many people and businesses would donate money, time and items to help get the kids off the streets? Everyone. No one enjoys seeing kids without a roof over their head. I say let her have the place and let her do what she wants with it.”

Jesus, fuck.

I hung my head, knowing I wasn’t going to win. Kali wasn’t going to let this go and now Blackjack was already plotting all the damn deductions he could claim.

“Prez! What the fuck?!” Trigger shouted, storming across the parking lot in my direction.

What the hell was wrong now?

“Kali told me you said I couldn’t sleep on the couch anymore. That I had to sleep in my apartment. I don’t like it there. It’s too sterile. Besides, Hellraiser and I like to have our fruity pebbles together. She ain’t gonna be happy if I’m not there in the morning. Who do you think has been teaching me about teatime? I just learned to hold up my pinky.”

Holy fuck.

How old was he again?

Blackjack snickered. “Kali wants the apartment building across the street for homeless kids and Prez told her no.”

“Let her have it,” Trigger snapped. “I ain’t slept in that place once. Besides, I prefer the couch. It’s real comfy.”
