I watched as Monk quietly got up. He stopped to look at Payne, who was standing near the door. “Knew you were going to be fucking trouble the second you showed up.”

“Not here to cause trouble, Monk. Just here to clean up a mess this club created five years ago.”

“Ain’t no trouble. The past is dead,” with that, Monk stormed out of church.

“I’ll keep an eye on him,” Pence said, before he left too, leaving me alone with Payne. When the last brother left, Payne shut the door and sat down at the table next to me.

Sighing, he looked around before saying, “Just gonna say it, Kansas. I don’t trust Monk. He’s hiding something. It’s been my experience that secrets tend to bite everyone in the ass when they come out. You need someone on the outside to do a deep dive into him. Someone not related or affiliated with this club. Someone good. Someone no one will suspect.”

I knew he was right.

Nodding, I reached for my phone and made a call. There was only one person on the planet I knew who could do what I needed and not get caught.

The fucker was fast, proficient and damn good at his job.

“Hi, Mr. Kansas!”

Smirking, I shook my head. “Hello, Sypher. Need a favor.”

“Sweet. Whatcha need? My English Lit class is boring as fuck and don’t even get me started on my advanced coding class. My professor doesn’t know dick about shit.”

I was fortunate to meet Sypher when a few of the brothers and I traveled to Tennessee to help Reaper and the Golden Skulls withthe Society. Talk about a clusterfuck. Everything that the club had been through and dealt with made my situation seem like child’s play.

“Got a brother here. Name’s Monk. Need a full background on him. Anything you can find, Sypher, and it’s not going to be easy. Brother is tight-lipped about his personal life. Don’t even have a name for you. However, I know he has a sister close by. He was an officer under Big Jim before the massacre. He and one more brother were the only surviving officers.”

“And the other officer?”

“Jinx,” I muttered, remembering my brother’s smiling face.

“Oh,” Sypher whispered softly. “Sorry, Mr. Kansas, I forgot.”

Yeah. Both clubs knew that name.

Jinx was the brother Shadow killed.

“It’s okay, kid. Do you think you can help?”

“Sure can. When you helped Reaper, I got curious and started a file on your club. Nothing too deep, but the Diamondbacks intrigued me. I enjoy learning how other clubs run. Anyway, I looked into the massacre five years ago. But I gotta say, Mr. Kansas, something isn’t sitting right with me.”

Sitting up, I placed the phone on the table and hit the speaker so Payne could hear. “Explain, Sypher.”

“Well, I thought it odd that Big Jim would send out a crew on a run but not send an officer with you guys. I mean, if he trusted you all, that’s great, but in my general knowledge, when there is a major run that needs to be done, the Prez always sends at least one officer to make sure everything goes smoothly.”

“Kid’s right, Kansas. Never heard of a President sending a crew out without an officer.”

“Hi Mr. Payne! How do you like Oklahoma? Have you visited the Museum of the Great Plains yet? It’s on my bucket list.”

Payne rolled his eyes, ignoring the kid as he asked, “Who was in charge of the run, Kansas?”

Thinking back to that time, I tried to remember who Big Jim put in charge, but I couldn’t think of anyone. “Not sure. I remember being told where the meet was and that he expected us back in five days. We finished in three. We took our time heading back until Pence got a call. Something was wrong. We hightailed it home in time to see the aftermath.”

“Everyone on the run was just club brothers. No officers?”

“No.” I shook my head.

“Sypher, amend the order,” Payne stated. “I want background on all the former officers. Everyone.”

“You want me to email the information to your private email?”
