“No, he’s at the clubhouse. You should stop by and say hello.”

“I might just do that,” he said before taking his leave.

Returning to Hope, I noticed that her brother, Shadow, was staring at someone behind me. Turning around again, I didn’t see anyone unfamiliar. Shaking off the tinge of worry, I said, “Hello, Shadow.”

“Mrs. Stone.”

“Please call me Kali. Everyone does.”

“I can’t do that, ma’am. You are the ol’ lady to the President of a club. It’s a respect thing.”

“Can I ask you something?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“How do you know Kansas?”

Shadow looked everywhere but at me before taking a deep breath and saying, “His club and my club worked together for a while.”

“You’re in a club too?”

“Yes, ma’am. I’m a patched brother of the Golden Skulls motorcycle club.”

“I heard of them. They were on the news several months ago. You helped bring down some unsavory people, correct?”

Shadow smirked. “Yes, ma’am.”

“Zeke and my older brother, Balthazar, are both members of the same club,” Hope said proudly, smiling up at her brother.

“My brother was in a motorcycle club too,” I muttered. I don’t know why I mentioned it. Maybe I needed the connection. Shadow said his club worked with the Diamondback M.C. Maybe he knew my brother. Maybe he could tell me something I didn’t know. Anything to ease the pain I was feeling.

“What club was he with? I might know him,” Shadow asked.

Taking a deep breath, I replied. “With the Diamondbacks, like Kansas. You might know him. His name was Jinx.”

Shadow froze.

“Was?” Hope asked, concerned.

“He died a while ago. I don’t know the specifics, but that’s what Kansas told me. I just found out last week.”

“Oh, Kali,” Hope said, walking around the table to hug me. “I am so sorry. No wonder you’ve been crying. You are grieving, sweetheart.”

Hugging her back, I never saw Shadow disappear into the background.

Releasing Hope, I wiped a lone tear that escaped as Vivi walked over. “Hey you two!”

“Hi Vivi,” Hope greeted.

I looked at my best friend and realized she was carrying a lot of bags. Shaking my head, I asked, “Buy enough?”

“It’s never enough.”

I chuckled at that.

“I’m gonna run these bags out to the truck. Are you okay until I get back?”

“I’m fine. Go. I will keep Hope company.”
