“Can’t do that, Kali. They know it’s me.”

“You’re not making any sense. Who knows?”

“Kansas and the others. They figured it out.”

“Figured what out?” I asked, slowly moving back towards the wall. When my back connected, I sat perfectly still as my eyes adjusted to my surroundings. I could see streams of light pierce the wooden slats, giving the barn some light, but not much.

The place was old and needed to be torn down.

A rumble of thunder off in the distance told me a storm was coming.

“We never meant for it to get this far. We were only trying to protect ourselves.”

“I don’t understand. Protect yourself from what?”

“He wouldn’t let it go. He kept digging. I tried to explain, but he wouldn’t listen. He said he was going to the Chief. I had to stop him.”

The good detective wasn’t making any sense.

I didn’t know what he was talking about. Let alone why he kidnapped me. I barely knew the man. What I knew about him made it hard for me to understand why he would do something like this.

“Justin, whatever is going on must be a mistake. I know you wouldn’t do anything to hurt another living soul.”

“You don’t understand!” he shouted, making me jump. Getting to his feet, he started pacing. “All he had to do was leave it alone. I didn’t mean to kill him. It just happened. He went for his gun. I had no choice. Then he showed up and I had to kill him too.”

Oh God.

“You were protecting yourself. I understand that,” I muttered, pulling my legs up closer, wrapping my arms around them. The man was seriously losing it. I’d never seen him so unhinged before. He was ready to snap at any minute.

“He kept asking questions. We just wanted him to leave it alone.”

“Leave what alone?”

“Oh God, everything is so messed up now. You see, we didn’t know they were fucking butt buddies. Fucking faggots in Oklahoma. Who fucking knew? Of course, He would tell his lover,” Conroy chuckled, then sneered evilly. “But we showed them what we do to fags around here.”

Oh. My. God.

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

The man was off his rocker.

Certifiably insane. He had to be. I tried keeping up with him, but he was all over the place. I didn’t know what he was talking about, but it didn’t take a genius to know that he killed someone, possibly more. Whatever he did was weighing on him heavily. I knew the longer I stayed in this barn, the harder it was going to be for me to escape.

Looking around the barn for anything, I asked, “Justin. Who did you kill?”

“No!” he shouted, rounding on me. That was when I noticed the gun in his hand. “It was not me. I didn’t kill them. He did.”

“Who?”

Justin shook his head as he hit himself repeatedly with his fist.

“Stupid, stupid, stupid!”

“Hey,” I whispered. “It’s okay. You’re not stupid, Justin. It’s going to be okay.”

He shook his head. “No, it’s not. They know and now they want to kill me.”

“No one is going to kill you. You need help, Justin. Let me help you. Can you do that?”
