“You knew?”

“I’m not stupid Montana. I read the society pages.”

“You said nothing.”

“Contrary to popular belief, I wasn’t with you for money. If you wanted to keep that part of your life separate from what we had, who was I to say differently? That was your choice to make.”

“Why were you with me, then?”

Cocking my head, I sighed. “Really. After all the shit you put me through, you don’t know?”

“Fine,” he growled, crossing his arms over his chest. “Why didn’t you call me? You had my private number. If you didn’t want to talk to me, you could have sent me a text. Fuck, Tessa. You could have emailed me. I missed so much of our son’s life. You denied me that. Why?”

I shrugged my shoulders.

I didn’t want to talk about this. I wanted York. I missed my baby. “I knew the rules. I knew the second I left, you wouldn’t want me back. I didn’t know about York when I left. I promise you that. If I had known, I would have told you.”

“No,” he stood up, shaking his head. “This has nothing to do with the rules. I know you. You would have called me the second you found out, but you didn’t. Why?”

“Just leave it alone, Montana. What’s done is done.”

“No. No, it’s not. You are lying to me. You never lie.”

When I kept my mouth shut, Montana grabbed me and pulled me to my feet. Shaking me, he shouted. “Tell me!”

“It was your mother!” I shouted, telling him what he wanted to know. “She said I was a gold-digging whore and would never be good enough for you. She told me to leave or she would make sure I never got a job in this city.”

He instantly released me, stepping back.

Shock on his face. “My mom?”

“Yes. Mrs. Virginia Stone, your mother.”

“I never introduced you to my mom. How?”

“I don’t fucking know. All I know is I just got done with my rounds at the hospital. I was tired and just wanted to shower and sleep. When I got to your room, your mother was sitting on your bed. She said her peace, then left. A few minutes later, my mom’s preacher called, telling me I needed to come home. I didn’t think. I just packed a bag and left.”

“Tessa, my mom was in the South of France with my father the summer you left. I don’t know who you spoke to, but it wasn’t my mom.”

“What?” I said, looking up at him, confused. “Your mom has black, short, cropped hair, right?”

“My mom’s a blonde. My dad has black hair.”

“Then who did I speak with?”

“No clue.”

Plopping back down on the bed, I hung my head. “It doesn’t matter. What we had is over. You don’t recycle pussy. I know that. We can co-parent York. I’ll stay in the city. I’m sure I can find a job somewhere. Maybe one of the health clinics is hiring. I’ll figure it out.”

Kneeling before me, Montana took my hands in his. “You’re right. I don’t recycle pussy, but you were never just pussy to me, Tess.”

Chapter Ten

Montana

Sitting in my den, I watched as Tessa played with York on the floor. She really was a wonderful mother. Attentive and caring, she was everything I could have ever hoped for as the mother of my son. I didn’t hide my smile when I brought Tessa back to my house and she saw York clapping happily as Mrs. Alice fed him some green goop that looked like shit. Yet, when my son saw his mother, his eyes lit up and the biggest smile I’d ever seen covered his face.

My boy was a true momma’s boy.
