I curled my lip.

I gritted my teeth.

“I think I’m on to something,” Remi said. “Riff is lonely. He’s in his feelings. So he’s blowing cash on some escort. She doesn’t even like you, does she? She pretends to like you. That’s what she’s getting paid for.”

I can say something right now…

“Hey, Remi,” I said. “Let me ask you something. How sad is it that you can’t find a decent woman so you trick one into marrying you while she’s drunk. Poor Mari. We should have an intervention and help her.”

“Holy shit,” Matias said. “Riff…”

Abel jumped toward Remi.

Too late.

Remi swatted Abel out of the way like he weighed nothing.

Abel stumbled and dropped to one knee.

He pointed at Reid. “Help!”

Remi charged at me.

I wasn’t going to back down from a fight.

Not with Remi.

I lunged for him.

He grabbed my shirt a second before I grabbed his.

Everyone jumped in to break up the scuffle.

Remi and I weren’t stupid.

This had nothing to do with him trying to make fun of me for having someone in my condo. It had nothing to do with me making fun of him over Mari.

In fact, Mari was a pretty badass woman herself.

She and Remi were happy. Happily married. With their dog family.

I was happy for the guy.

I wanted to tell him that too.

But I just couldn’t.

He couldn’t let go of the past.

Just wait until you hear about the present…

The guys broke Remi and I apart.

“That’s enough of this shit,” Abel yelled. “You know what? Team meeting tonight. I’m calling it. All of us. To work this shit out. I’m tired of dealing with this.”

“You’re just tired,” I said to Abel. “Kid at home. Baby on the way. You’re all beat up.”

“Team. Meeting.”
