Which was for the best.

Although I had some questions about tonight.

About this current situation I found myself in with Fiona.

I wiped my hands with several wet napkins to clean up from the insanely hot sauce on the wings.

Remi did the same.

I casually drank a beer as my mouth burned with intense fire.

“Look at them,” Remi said, pointing to the television screen. “They have no defense. Offensively they’re fast. Young kids that can move. But once the other team gets the puck and starts going, they’ve got nothing.”

I looked from the corner of my left eye.

I saw Fiona looking my way.

No. I can’t look at her. I can’t blow our cover.

I turned my head to the right just as my phone screen lit up.

With a text from Fiona.

I turned a little and grabbed my phone.

Holy shit Riff! How did this happen?

I shook my head, debating how to respond to her.

I don’t know Fi. You tell me. Why didn’t you say anything about going out to dinner with your brother?

I sent the text, put my phone down, and grabbed my beer.

“So what’s with you sneaking around town?” Remi asked Fiona.

My phone vibrated again.

Fiona talked to her brother.

I read her text.

I had no choice! I ran into his wife. Panicked. I didn’t know you had plans with him first. You didn’t tell me.

Oh, Fi, this is not my fault at all…

My thumbs went to work.

I told you I had hockey stuff tonight. What did you think that meant?

“Yeah, well, something feels off here,” Remi said. “I feel like you’re lying to me, Fiona.”

“Okay, fine, Remi. I’m lying about everything.” Fiona giggled. “I’m actually on the run. I’m wanted for a string of bank robberies.”

“What?” Remi asked.

Fiona giggled louder.

How come when she giggles I feel stuff? Huh?
