Even when I climbed the crooked, slightly broken trellis.

I knew where to put my feet to keep my balance and to keep the trellis from breaking.

I pulled myself up onto the first roof.

I inched across, passing by two windows.

I saw the light on in Fiona’s room.

There was my next stop.

When I got to the window, I crouched a little and gently tapped on the glass.

I did it a few more times before leaning closer to the window to look into it.

I saw Fiona looking at me.

Her eyes went wide.

I waved.

I pointed to my chest and then pointed at her.

She looked at her bedroom door.

She bit on her bottom lip.

Come on, Fi, let me in. Please let me in.

She looked at me again.

Then she nodded.

I pressed my hands to the window and pushed up.

The old window protested for a second or two but then it moved.

Enough that I could slip my fingers under the open window and push it up all the way.

I stuck my right leg into her bedroom and then climbed in the rest of the way.

I stood, turned and quietly shut the window.

I looked around Fiona’s room.

It had all the cliché pinks and purples of a girl’s room.

It smelled like body spray perfume.

“The door,” she whispered to me.

I walked to her bedroom door and twisted the small lock.

That’s when I exhaled.

“Riff, what are you doing here?”

I went to the side of her bed. “I had to see you, Fi.”
