“Please. You grew up wanting to ice skate. That’s not a real job.”

“It’s not goddamn ice skating, Fiona.”

Remi hated when I said he ice skated for a living.

Just a cheap and easy way to get under his ultra-thick skin.

I punched him in the left arm. “You’re such a soft idiot, Remi.”

“Yeah. Such a soft idiot for caring about my sister.”

“And your sister has made it very clear that she’s happy.”

“Happy here. Why here?”

“An art gallery? Seriously?”

“No, Fiona. Whyhere. This place? This town.”

My chest tightened a little. “I don’t know, Remi. I just stumbled into this place. I wasn’t planning on staying. I lost my job and had this sudden urge to just get out of where I was. I came here… I met Demi by accident…”

“And you’re living in a hotel?”

“I never said that. Demi lives here. And she has a beach house.”

Oh, Fiona. Carrying so many lies at once.

Remi stared intently. “I’m not sure I’m following this. Do you live here? Do you live at a beach house? You don’t live at a hotel though. But you made me drop you off at a hotel.”

“Remi, what is this? I don’t need this right now.”

“I can’t ask my sister where she’s living? That seems weird.”

“I don’t like your tone. You’re being judgmental. You’re investigating me.”

“Investigating you?” Remi asked.

“Yeah. That’s right.”

I turned and walked away.

Panic crept through my body.

I needed an escape plan. And fast.

What I needed was my phone.

I needed to text Demi to make up an excuse. An emergency.

Something to get my brother out of here.

Then again, was I going to live like this for the rest of my life?

“I can smell bullshit, Fiona,” Remi said.

I walked behind the counter and laughed. “What do you think is happening? Look around, Remi. Dig into my life. Have at it. Don’t you have a wife to care for?”

“My wife said you were acting weird.”
