“Nasty stomach bug, Riff. Or maybe you ate a bad taco.”

“A bad taco?”

“Lie through your teeth. We’re both good at it. Look how far it got us!”

I pulled Fiona in front of me.

I shook her off my right arm.

Then I touched her face.

She grabbed my wrists.

The worry and care in her eyes…

“You knew at some point this would happen,” I said. “And here we are. The one thing we’re not going to do is hide. Or run.”

“You didn’t see his face.”

“I know. I wish we had a better way of handling this. We knew something was going to happen, right? We broke all the rules, Fi. We did that together.”

“It’s my brother,” she said. “He saw the picture. The drawing.”

“Should we be mad at Demi?”

“No! She’s already upset at herself over it. Because when Remi saw the sketch, he just slid it toward me and stared. I couldn’t think of a word to say, Riff. I felt like I was on an island. So I just blurted it out.”

“That you love me.”

“Yes. That I love you. And that you love me. And then he just got silent. Shocked. Mad. And you know what he did next?”

“You already told me this story.”

“I’m telling it again,” Fiona said. “Because you need to call your… agent? Coach? Someone. You need to call and fake sick.”

“I’m not faking sick.”

“He stared at me and then he just backed away. Step after step. Sort of nodding. Sort of curling his lip. The look in his eyes…”

“I know. He’s livid. He hates me more than ever.”

“I think he hates me too, Riff.”

“No. Remi will never hate you. He can be as mad as he wants but he can never hate you.”

“Riff, now what? What happens next?”

“The best answer I’ve got is to just move forward.”

“That’s a terrible answer. I hate that answer. I think I hate you a little for saying that.”

I smiled. “I love you, Fiona.”

I leaned down and kissed her, grabbed my bag off the floor and threw it over my right shoulder.

Fiona ran to the kitchen and started opening and closing drawers.

I paused at the door. “What are you doing?”
