Refusing to look my way.

There was a moment when Remi looked my way and caught me staring at him.

He rose up - three hundred feet tall - and took one step before Abel began to give a pre-game speech.

Then we all went out to the ice.

Our pre-game skate.

Warming up our legs. Feeling out the ice. Taking shots on goal.

Stretching.

The normal routine of it all.

Remi again kept to himself.

Until he didn’t.

I skated around the net behind Maverick and out toward center ice.

From the corner of my eye I saw Remi coming my way.

Instead of hitting me, he got in front of me and blocked my path.

He didn’t say a word.

He just stared.

I moved to the left.

So did he.

I moved to the right.

He did too.

“Can’t even have a conversation,” I said.

“I don’t think talking will work here,” Remi said.

“Hey. It speaks. The giant lumbering asshole talks. Good for you, Remi.”

I skated backward and he looked ready to explode.

The pre-game skate ended and we went back into the locker room.

Things sped up even more.

Coach and Mags gave their pep talks.

The announcements began for the game.

The away team getting booed by our fans.

Then the announcer screaming for us to get on the ice and the arena erupting in cheers.

The main lights were turned down very low.
