He reached up and pulled the bandage off, revealing a few stitches.

I wasn’t sure if I’d ever seen Remi beat up like this before.

“We should’ve talked,” I said. “When you saw that drawing. We should’ve talked before that, Remi. That’s my fault.”

Remi disappeared.

I heard him in the kitchen.

I went after him.

“Are you going to just ignore me now? That’s it? For the rest of my life?”

Still nothing from Remi.

My blood started to boil.

“You’ve got to be kidding me, Remi,” I said. “This is what you’re going to do? Shut me out? Because I found someone I love.”

Remi swiped the glass he put on the counter right into the sink.

He spun around.

“That’s right,” I said. “Love. I love him. He loves me. You’re going to have to hear it, face it and accept it.”

“Accept it?”

“Come on, Remi. This is stupid. Back then. Now. Why does it matter?”

“I hope you’re really happy, Fiona,” he said. “I really do.”

“I am really happy. And I don’t get what your issue really is here. Trying to be protective? I get that. But it’s Riff. You two were so close.”

“Then we weren’t,” Remi said.

“Because he saved your life?”

“Because he almost took yours.”

“Bullshit,” I said. “You two worked that out. I watched it happen.”

“We were never the same.”

“That was your fault, Remi. You couldn’t move forward. You could never move forward. I don’t get it. I’m telling you I’m happy. I’m telling you I’m in love. Guess what? I’m sorry if that doesn’t line up with whatever you wanted for me. Let me ask you something, brother. Have I ever asked you for a thing?”

Remi’s jaw tightened.

“Answer me,” I growled. “Did I ever ask you for money? For a place to stay? For a car? For help? Ever…?”

“Anyone else in the world,” Remi said.

“Says the guy who got drunk at a wedding and woke up married.”

“That’s different.”

“Yeah. Sure. It’s so different, Remi. So fucking different. Thanks for breaking my heart. Some big brother you are.”

I knew that was a dagger to his back.
