The setting absolutely perfect.

In reality the only thing missing was Riff.

A place like this? Riff and I would have a blast here.

“I knew it was going to happen,” I said. “I knew we couldn’t sneak around forever. It was either a fling that would find its end. Or it would be this. And here we are.”

I lifted the teacup and nodded.

“Would you like me to take a side?” Demi offered. “I can call your brother an asshole. Or I can call the man you love a wimp. Either way, I’m good.”

I looked at Demi. “In other words, there’s no right or wrong here.”

“Welcome to what life really is, Fiona,” Demi said.

“They were best friends though. They grew up together. I understood Remi getting mad because of the car accident. But I was fine. He just couldn’t let it go.”

“Maybe he doesn’t want to let you go,” Demi said.

“Crap on that. He’s got a wife now. They’re happy.”

“So it’s just a mess,” Demi said.

“Have you ever been in a mess before?”

“Sure I have. Everyone has.”

“Can you tell me yours?”

“Well. I suppose. I fell in love with a man when I was nineteen. He was handsome. Joyous.” Demi leaned toward me. “Ravenous in bed.”

“Good for you.”

“Only his family had a path for him. They chose the college. The law school. They had his career and life all laid out. Me? I wasn’t going to go down that path. It just wasn’t meant to be. We had one big argument over it. And we never talked again.”

“Why not?”

“I just knew what would happen. He’d give it all up for me. And I’d wear that weight forever.”

“And that was it? Did you ever check on him?”

“Every second I could,” she said. “For his entire life. He became a successful lawyer. Met a beautiful woman and married. Had three boys. They all got married to beautiful women and had kids. It was amazing to see.”

“And that’s it? You never…”

“Why ruin it for him?”

“Demi. You deserve happiness.”

“So did his family, Fiona.”

“Well now my heart is breaking even more. I’m so sorry about that.”

“You know how some talk about fate? Like they want to just sit around and let things happen. I don’t think it works like that. I think you have to just go for it. See where things go. And sometimes you have to let go. You have to make a hard decision that nicks your heart a little. Leaves a scar. Have I loved others? Of course I have.”

“But not like him?”

“Never like him.”
